Media Transfer Protocol USB Driver Fails to Install in Windows 7

I have a Windows 7, Home, 64bit and an Android 4.3 phone. I cannot import pictures from the phone to PC.

  1. Using USB cable I connect Samsung Android phone to the PC.
  2. Windows begins driver installation and displays "Failed to install MTP driver".

The steps I performed included:

  1. I installed the latest driver available on the Samsung Website.
  2. This driver for some reason is not being used by Windows because every time I connect the phone Windows begins its own installation of the driver which fails.
  3. I ran hardware diagnostics on the USB port connected to the phone and got "Child device is disabled".
  4. I tried most of the suggestions related to this topic on the forum. None worked.
  5. I spoke with Samsung tech support and ran their software, Kies, designed to connect Samsung phones to Windows 7. Kies fails with the error message saying that some security program prevented it from establishing USB connection.
  6. I re-ran Samsung's Kies with Firewall and Microsoft Security Essentials disabled. It still doesn't work.

Thanks.

To update, I too tried uninstalling the windows update without success.

It's really appaling that support just seemed to die on this thread.

I dislike apple, not that I'm a fanboy but I'll stick to windows.  I'm not changing my OS because my phone won't connect and for the time being, I guess I'll keep using my work around.

Personally I am thinking there is some Win7 issue with Android 4.4.2  but then it seems others are having the same issue with other flavors.

I'm using a Sprint Samsung Galaxy S4 (SPH L-720) but can see that it doesn't seem to be just this phone.

I just thought I'd mention that I'm having the same problem with a Samsung Galaxy S-4.

I have no where near the expertise that you guys have as most of this is over my head but I can say that my other phones connect to my PC flawlessly with any of the now 4 cords I have.

Another note is that I don't receive this problem on either of my laptops, Win XP and Win 8.1.

I've tried numerous flavors of the Samsung drivers, as well as Kies.

I will read on hoping for an answer as I've now spent some 20 hours hacking away at the problem.

My work around has been networking my phone from the Win 8.1 laptop to my Desktop Win7 64 machine.

    Hey Apolo,

To uninstall the driver for the MTP device you are trying to use you will need to open the device manager. You can open this snap-in by clicking on start and typing "Device", then selecting the Device Manager from the list. Once you have the Device Manager open you can look for your device in the list. The iPhone I was using was located under Portable Devices > Apple iPhone. Once you have located the failed device , right-click the device and choose uninstall.

To uninstall the windows update you will need to open the Uninstall an Update window. To open this click on start and type "installed updates" then select "view installed updates" from the list. Once this window is open using the Search Installed Updates box at the top right, search for KB2685813. Once the update is found right-click it and choose uninstall.

So, to recap all you should try:

    1. Open Device Manager
    2. Locate failed MTP USB device
    3. Right click device and uninstall driver
    4. Open Uninstall an Update window
    5. Search for KB2685813
    6. Right-click update and choose uninstall
    7. Shutdown computer
    8. Unplug all USB devices
    9. Power up computer
    10. Plug in standard USB flash drive
    11. Plug in portable device.

    Dear Sam,

Thank you very much for putting so much effort into this problem. I followed your instructions, uninstalled the MTP USB and KB2685813. Upon restart I verified that both MTP and KB2685813 were not present on the PC. Yet when I plugged in the Andorid phone (which used to work in the past) I got the same failure message: MTP USB Device Failed.

Seems like I tried everything under the sun. Previously I was working with a Microsoft technical support representative on this issue. She had me run various traces that recorded events at the driver level of the operating system. All in all I sent her about 4-5 very long trace files. And in the end she didn't help me. It seems like a very simple problem: plain vanilla desk top PC running well established OS, Windows 7. Hardware is working properly, passes all hardware tests for USB, other USB devices work properly from the same USB port on the PC. The problem showed up after some OS software updates.

Anyway, thank you again for your suggestion.

    Apolo
