Cannot remove hiberfil.sys. No matter what.

Hi guys, for the past few weeks I have been on a frustrating journey to delete hiberfile.sys and out of desperation I am asking for some help.

My Windows 7 came installed on its own drive which only has a capacity of 29.7gb. I have been installing all my programs and everything on the other drive but the hiberfil.sys is taking up 8.3gb, and despite all my best efforts (using CCcleaner, media stored on external HD etc etc) this drive only has a couple of hundred MB free and is way in the red.

Bottom line is, I don't want hibernate and I don't want this file taking up 27% of my C:/ and it won't leave.

Ok, so I have read just about every guide on the first 3 pages of the google search "remove hiberfil.sys" and they all basically give the same steps.

so far, this is what I have done:

  • Gone in to power settings and ensured hibernate is disabled - in fact its not there at all.
  • Opened an elevated cmd prompt in administrator mode and typed powercfg -h off.
  • I have also done the above in about 50 different syntax configurations - every one that I found online (e.g. powercfg.exe /HIBERNATE OFF)
  • I know for a fact that the syntax works because I used powercfg.exe /HIBERNATE /SIZE 50 and it actually changed the  size. It actually changed the size from 6GB to 8GB which was a big shock as I was under the impression that it as 75% by default, but anyway...
  • After powercfg -off in as many syntax's as I could find, I would restart my machine and the hiberfil.sys is always still there.
  • No where I could find online or on any forums showed anyone experiencing this same problem where it isn't removed after doing that step.

So what's so special about my laptop? You tell me (well hopefully you can anyway).

I appreciate any help you can give me - this thing has been bugging me so much and I just cannot do anything to get rid of this redundant file.

Thanks in advance :)

    Hi Vaughan,

The Hiberfil.sys hidden system file is located in the root folder of the drive where the operating system is installed. The Windows Kernel Power Manager reserves this file when you install Windows. The size of this file is approximately equal to how much random access memory (RAM) is installed on the computer.

The computer uses the Hiberfil.sys file to store a copy of the system memory on the hard disk when the hybrid sleep setting is turned on. If this file is not present, the computer cannot hibernate.

I would suggest you to delete the file in Safe mode and check. Ensure that the hibernation is not enabled.

If you still cannot delete it, use Windows 7 installation disk to boot the computer into safemode with command prompt and execute the command to delete the file.
