Qualcomm Atheros AR9485 802./11b/g/n WiFi Adapter Driver version 10.0.0.276 has disappeared, have NO WiFi on my HP Notebook

I have a 1 year old HP Pavilion TS 15 Notebook PC (64-bit operating system, x64-based processor) ) that came with windows 8 + WiFi. After upgrading to 8.1 last summer I started having occasionally connectivity issues, which I could always eliminate by rebooting (since the drivers were up to date). Now after the New Year it's been down completely - I simply cannot connect no matter what I do!  HELP!! I have to connect the Ethernet cable to be able to have internet, and yet my old Toshiba works brilliantly with its WiFi.

It says I have no WiFi at all on my Notebook, yet all the scans says the drivers are up to date. Then the windows diagnostic scan says the device can not start (code 10) ? Qualcomm Atheros AR9485 802./11b/g/n Wifi Adapter, "Operation Failed". Location: PCI bus 1, device 0, function 0

No viruses found.

It says this device isn't using any resources because it has a problem. ?

YES, OF COURSE it has a problem, but WHAT KIND of problem??? I'm going nuts here trying to resolve this sooner than soon, an no luck so far... :( Even the HP technical support didn't manage to resolve it, they just suggested for me to buy more services from them so they could help in a more advanced way, what??! My one year guarantee rungs out on the Jan 13th, yet NO support do I get when I MOST need it??!!!!

I'm aware you might not be interested of this, but needed to mention the reason for the urgency - the guarantee runs out the very same day when I arrive home in Europe for my father's funeral next weekend (which I'm supposed to more or less live stream to my other family here in the U.S., as he was a much loved and respected war veteran, and no one wants to miss giving their respect to him on his last journey, yet here I am - still struggling 3rd day in a row with this WiFi issue and it's making me more and more concerned, as my preparations for my journey gets postponed day after another... :( :(

Is there anyone here - anyone at all - who could give hard working girl a helping hand, please...? I'd bless you to the moon and back, I swear!

I don't know what kind of additional info I should post here to help to figure out where the problem is, but I promise to search that info as soon as you tell me...suggest what think would work and I'll try to fix it at my end to my best knowledge, but could you please hurry - I have to get this fixed latest by this weekend, by the 10th, as my flight leaves on the 12th...

    Hello Rahul!

First of all, thank you for answering my questions!

    To your questions:

    1. The model is HP Pavillion TouchSmart 15-n020us 15.6-Inch Touchscreen Laptop. Do you need more info?
    2. I did not make any changes on my computer.
    3. Yes, I receive a message "There is no driver installed for this device", meaning HP Qualcomm Atheros Wireless LAN Driver, version 10.0.0.274, Valid operating systems: WIN8, WIN864

And when doing HP diagnostic scan it says "Possible Root Causes>No Network Detected (102)

    1. I've ran HP diagnostic scans and it tried to download the Qualcomm Atheros driver, but always failed, then ran a separate Driver Support scans, and was confirmed my Qualcomm Atheros driver was missing. Downloaded the driver, and it's supposed to be up to date now, but nope, it's nowhere to be detected.

Have ran your method 1 with troubleshooting, and it says there's no driver installed for this device.

Have ran your method 2 uninstalling the WiFi driver and ghost drivers (which I found three), rebooted, then updating the driver again at device manager, and it says "Windows has determined the driver software ( Qualcomm Atheros AR9485 802./11b/g/n WiFi Adapter)

for your device is up to date".

Have ran Windows update as well, and it says everything is up to date.

I'm lost here, help! What's going on??????????

Oh, and on the Resource Settings it says "This device isn't using any resources because it has a problem", but it doesn't say what kind of problem...

Location: PCI bus 1, device 0, function 0

    Hello Marianne,

I can understand the inconvenience caused, be assured that we are here to help you with your concern.

In order to assist you better, kindly confirm on the questions below.

    1. What is the exact model of your laptop? HP has more than 300 products contain the term 'pavilion ts 15 notebook pc'.
    2. Prior to the issue did you make any changes to the computer?
    3. Do you receive any error message when you try to connect to wifi?
    4. What scans did you perform to see if the drivers are up to date?

Cause: The Code 10 error is one of several Device Manager Error codes. The Code 10 error will almost always display in the following way: "This device cannot start. (Code 10)".

A Code 10 error is generated when Device Manager can't start the hardware device, a situation usually caused by outdated or corrupted drivers. A device may also receive a Code 10 error if a driver generates an error that Device Manager doesn't understand. In other words, a Code 10 error can sometimes be a very generic message indicating some kind of unspecified driver or hardware problem.

To fix this issue, use the following methods in the order in which they are listed. After each method, check if problem is fixed. If the problem is not fixed, try the next method.

Method 1: Run the Network Adapter Troubleshooter.

This troubleshooter is an automated Windows 8.1 inbuilt tool which finds and fixes the common issues with the Network Adapter Settings on the computer. It also checks if the network adapter drivers are up to date or not. It may also provide you some clue about the hardware failures happening to the Network Adapter. Perform these steps to run this tool and check if that helps.

    1. Press “Windows Logo” + “W” keys to get the Search option.
    2. Type “Troubleshooting” in the search bar and press “Enter”.
    3. In the “Troubleshooting” window, click on “View All” on the left pane.
    4. Click on “Network Adapter”.
    5. Click on “Advanced” and then click on “Run as Administrator”.
    6. Click “Next” and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the troubleshooting process.

    Method 2:

Step 1: Uninstall the Wifi Driver from Device Manager.

    1. Press the “Windows Logo + R” key from the desktop to get the Run option.
    2. Type devmgmt.msc and press OK.
    3. Expand the Network Adapters.
    4. Right click on the Wifi Drivers.
    5. Click uninstall Driver button.
    6. Click on OK button.

Step 2: Uninstall the Ghost Drivers.

Several things can contribute to the addition of ghost devices in the Windows Device Manager.  Some of these include adding or removing hardware.  These "ghost" devices can retain Port, SCSI, Target, and logical unit number (LUN) information that conflict with the active devices being used by Windows.  Under these circumstances, hardware instability can result.

To identify and remove the ghost devices from the Windows Device Manager, do the following:

    1. Press Windows Logo + X keys together and select Device Manager from the List.
    2. Then, select View from the drop down and select to Show Hidden Devices.
    3. At this point, any ghost devices will be seen with lighter, transparent icon and can be removed.
    4. Right-click the ghost device and selecting "Uninstall".
    5. Restart the computer and check.

Step 3: Install the latest Wifi Driver from the Manufacturers website.

I suggest you to update the latest Wifi Driver and also other drivers which are failing from manufacturer's website. Please follow the below article to see how you can download and install the latest drivers.
