Cause: The Code 10 error is one of several Device Manager Error codes. The Code 10 error will almost always display in the following way:
"This device cannot start. (Code 10)".
A Code 10 error is generated when Device Manager can't start the hardware device, a situation usually caused by outdated or corrupted drivers. A device may also receive a Code 10 error if a driver generates an error that Device
Manager doesn't understand. In other words, a Code 10 error can sometimes be a very generic message indicating some kind of unspecified driver or hardware problem.
To fix this issue, use the following methods in the order in which they are listed. After each method, check if problem is fixed. If the problem is not fixed, try the next method.
Method 1: Run the Network Adapter Troubleshooter.
This troubleshooter is an automated Windows 8.1 inbuilt tool which finds and fixes the common issues with the
Network Adapter Settings on the computer. It also checks if the network adapter drivers are up to date or not. It may also provide you some clue about the hardware failures happening to the Network Adapter. Perform these steps
to run this tool and check if that helps.
- Press “Windows Logo” + “W” keys to get the
Search option.
- Type “Troubleshooting” in the search bar and press “Enter”.
- In the “Troubleshooting” window, click on “View All” on the left pane.
- Click on “Network Adapter”.
- Click on “Advanced” and then click on “Run as Administrator”.
- Click “Next” and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the troubleshooting process.
Method 2:
Step 1: Uninstall the Wifi Driver from Device Manager.
- Press the “Windows Logo + R” key from the desktop to get the
Run option.
- Type devmgmt.msc and press OK.
- Expand the Network Adapters.
- Right click on the Wifi Drivers.
- Click uninstall Driver button.
- Click on OK button.
Step 2: Uninstall the Ghost Drivers.
Several things can contribute to the addition of ghost devices in the Windows Device Manager. Some of these include adding or removing hardware. These "ghost" devices can retain Port, SCSI, Target, and logical unit number (LUN)
information that conflict with the active devices being used by Windows. Under these circumstances, hardware instability can result.
To identify and remove the ghost devices from the Windows Device Manager, do the following:
- Press Windows Logo + X keys together and select
Device Manager from the List.
- Then, select View from the drop down and select to
Show Hidden Devices.
- At this point, any ghost devices will be seen with lighter, transparent icon and can be removed.
- Right-click the ghost
device and selecting "Uninstall".
- Restart the computer and check.
