Hold down the Ctrl key while you single click on files you want to delete to highlight them and then press Delete.
Tip: Don't try to do them all at once. Do 20 or so at a time in case they become un-highlighted so you don't have to start over.

I have foolishly amassed 429 items, some I want to keep and a load I want to clear.
Having this 429, a back up takes a longer time to do. Please, what is the best way to
sort this mess out. Thank you.

You're very welcome.
Dear Bruce,
Thank you for your super quick response. Yes this method works a treat, especially being able to multi--
delete. I will now work my way through the folder. Thank you again.
