Sorry I forgot to mention that windows product label is no longer visible on bottom of my laptop. When I removed battery case I saw some numbers mentioned there. Is it of any use?

Also I can't follow your steps since as soon as I open slui.exe it is giving me only three options i.e.

    1. buy new product key
    2. enter new product key
    3. contact HP to resolve this.

I have already tried third option but it is not working. I bought this laptop in Sep 2009.

    Please help.

There is a 4th option, apply the HP OEM activation using the ABR program and the HP cert files, see here:

If the number and letters inside the battery case look like this XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX

then it a product key you can use to activate with.

If whats on the bottom of case is no too bad try a magnifying glass and flashlight to read the key.

Did you check inside the battery case or bottom of the laptop (side cover of a desktop) for the product key? Also have you contacted HP about either recovery media or using the "Recovery Partition" to restore Vista (backup you data files to external media before you start), see the end of my reply for additional information.

Note: You also have a blocked Volume License Key for MS Office.

If you still can find the 25 character Vista product key then try the following (be advised that they may require a product key.

How to activate Windows 7 or Vista manually (activate by phone)

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950929/en-us

    1. Click Start, and in the Search box type: slui.exe 4
    2. Next press the 'ENTER' key
    3. Select your 'Country' you are located in from the drop down list.
    4. Choose the 'Phone Activation' option.
    5. Stay on the phone *** do not select/press any options *** and wait for a person to help you.
    6. Explain your problem clearly to the support person.
    7. The support person should give you a confirmation ID, copy it down on paper,
    8. Verify the ID is correct by reading back to the support person.
    9. Enter the ID number and click 'Next' to finish the activation process.
