I have Windows 7, but the scanner installation CD is for Windows XP or earlier. Do I need any more software or drivers? Or can I directly scan documents from my machine?

Yes, jo-anna is right, it does work on my W7 64.  I also had to install the Vista 64 driver, setup_basic_4500_5500.exe and reboot.  You may also have to find various exe files and set them for compatibility with XP SP3 under Program Files (x86)\Hewlett-Packard.

BTW, you could visit http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?os=228&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&sw_lang=&product=77375#N179 for the XP software jo-anna mentions.  I'm not sure it's required after installing the Vista driver, but it does work.

I like to confirm that using Vista 64 driver for HP5550C also works with Windows 8.1 64 bit.

The original software is HP photo and imaging 2.0, copyright 2004. I installed it years ago on my XP computer and no problems. For my Windows 7 computer, I installed it with HP and paper port. Looked under Properties/Compatibility and there was no setting.I could see the pictures in the various folders but no toolbar or functions were available. Changed compatibility to W7. No change. Changed compatibility to XP, service pack 3, bingo! I didn’t check any of the boxes under SETTINGS—there were more choices than on the XP computer. A box comes up asking to make changes to your computer by running: hpqthb08.exe. punch YES.

When you punch SCAN , the box comes up with the same choices available on my other (XP) computer:

    HP Scanjet 4500/5550c TWAIN 1.0(32-32)

    WIA-HP Scanjet 4500/5550c 1.0 (32-32)

Your best choice is the WIA-HP , color picture, and punch in the dpi you want under CUSTOM and off you go. I have another HP4500 officejet hooked up, and it won’t allow the normal HP Scanjet function to run (error message). On my XP computer, I only used the WIA option for black and white scans. I also have a canon MP210 printer/scanner hooked up, and I run all three thru the HP photo and imaging software 2.0—the box that comes up when you punch SCAN allows you to choose what printer/scanner you want to use, and the interface is faster than either of the other 2 printers. The 5550c makes better color scans than the newer models of HP or canon. And still scanning like a champ after 7 years!

HP obviously have no interest in prolonging the useful life of their hardware (buy another scanner please) but for those who do not have unlimited finds just to make something available for people still using the 5550c HP scanner; the Vista (basic function) drivers from the HP website work under Windows 10 (inc. Creator) - only checked the 32 bit version of Windows 10. Extracted the setup_basic_4500_5500.exe file (I used 7-Zip) and then ran DPInst32.exe. It gave an advisory on finishing along the lines of "the drivers may not have been installed properly - do you want to try compatibility mode". I left this option on-screen and checked whether the scanner was working and it was, so I declined. Didn't bother trying to install any of the application software it came with (it was Windows XP only I think) it was pretty poor stuff anyway.
