You need to install the appropriate codec to play the Matroska (.MKV) file. This codec is not provided with Windows Media Player by default, hence why it won't play it. As a starting point, look here for further info on MKV codec. Hope this helps.

You can run the file in chrome or Firefox browsers no need to install any codecs

I just solved this problem on my own PC. WIndows Media Player suddenly stopped playing MKV videos after I force-closed (crashed) my PC. I just installed the K-Lite Mega Codec Pack (FULL option. Not the MEGA option). And then restarted my PC. Problem solved! I've been using the K-Lite Codec Packs for over 10 years now. They are perfectly fine. Others codec packs I looked at wanted me to uninstall ALL software on my computer that would use codecs, before installing the codecs. Seriously! Just stick with K-Lite. The codecs you need are the LAV Filters, but just install the entire thing and don't fiddle with the installation options. It's preset options are already set up in the best way for use.

Use the VLC media player. It is a small player that comes with a lot of codecs.

    Hi Sam,

Sorry to say but the link you provided didn't help me fix the problem. I could play mkv files on my win 7, but after a while don't know how I couldn't play mkv files now... Is there anyway to repair windows media player settings ? Thanks with funny quotes
