What original name? If you are editing an Unsaved playlist, then it doesn't have a name yet. It's perfectly normal that you need to enter a name when you click Save list the first time. The next time you save, you won't have to enter a name anymore (because then it's not an unsaved playlist anymore).
Windows Media Player-how to add audio files to existing playlist
Editing existing playlist in Player 12 - Big Pain
In previous versions of media player I could drag a song from a windows explore panel directly into a playlist. so adding media was a snap to a playlist. Now you have to open it in the play panel, add the media, and then you HAVE TO CREATE A BRAND NEW NAME FOR THE PLAYLIST which is ABSURD! In other words you can't edit the playlist, hit SAVE, and the playlist you are working on is saved. You always have to create a NEW name. What I do is add a '1' to the old name, create the NEW name, and then I have to go back and delete the old list. Again. this is ridiculously cumbersome. Can Microsoft address this problem? Does anyone else find this to be a major pain?

2015-02-16T06:05:47+00:00 I think I understand this question because I too believe I experienced the same problem. You see, when I open my Windows Media Player, my old play lists show up under "playlists" in the left pane of the player. If I click the expand arrow I see my old play list.
When I click on that play list, all the songs in the list appear in the center "play" panel but not in the playlist panel on the right (the one that allows you to add music to it). It remains empty. There doesn't appear to be any way to add new songs to the list! After messing around for about 25 minutes or so, I discovered how to do it.
If you double-click the playlist name in the left panel, it automatically fills the far right playlist panel with the list and it is ready for editing with the correct name.
So, the way to add to an existing list, is to double-click on the name of the playlist on the left side of the player and the song names will appear in playlist editor on the right side of the player.

2013-03-20T01:55:15+00:00 I have found that if you play the song file in WMP, you can add it to an existing list. While the song is playing, look in the right side panel and right click on the song title. Dialogue box will appear and give an option of "add to". Mouse over that option and then choose the name of the list you wish to add the song to. You will not have to save the changes, as they are save automatically for you.

2016-03-19T01:29:26+00:00 double clicking on left to edit on right is good, here is one more tip... right click on the playlists word on the top left click customize and in the top pick all - now all your playlist show on the left side ready to be double clicked and edited on right
enjoy!

2011-03-21T23:32:09+00:00 After I get the list over to the far right pane, I add content (by dragging a song from an explore window), when I click 'Save List' at the top of the list - it wants me to enter a new name in the 'unsaved list' tab - right at the top of the list. If I don't do that - I lose the changes. If I do put in a new name - now I have a whole new name for my playlist - have to delete the old name, etc etc. Can't get it to just save the list as the original name. crazy.
