Windows Update stops(hung-up on 41% complete) working at midway point.

Original title: Windows Update stops working at midway point

I have a Lenovo IdeaCentre K220 running Windows 7 home premium. When Windows Update tried to download 12 updates to my computer today, it got hung-up on download No. 6 (41% complete) and progressed no further. Now, when I try to shut down, it starts trying to download the updates, gets stuck at the sixth item, and I have to force quit to turn off the computer. I tried restarting several times and ran a complete scan with my anti-virus program, but the problem persists. Any ideas how to fix it?

Hi,

We are happy to assist you in fixing “Windows Updates installation issue”. Please answer the following questions to help me understand the issue better:

  1. Which antivirus application are you using?
  2. Did you make any changes to the computer prior to this issue?

Let’s diagnose the issue by referring to the following suggestion and check the issue status.

Method 1: Run the Windows Updates troubleshooter and check the issue status. An automatic troubleshooter is available that fixes some problems with Windows Update,

Troubleshoot problems with installing updates.

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/troubleshoot-problems-installing-updates#1TC=windows-7

Method 2:

I would suggest you to perform a clean boot and check if it helps.

Clean boot will check if any third party application is causing the issue, as clean boot helps in eliminating software conflicts.

How to troubleshoot problem by performing clean boot in Windows: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135 Note: Once you are done with the troubleshooting, perform the steps in “How to reset the computer to start as usual after troubleshooting with clean boot “to reset computer as usual.

Method 3: You can also check by disabling the 3rd party antivirus application if you are running 3rd party antivirus application on your computer.

Disable antivirus software, install the updates and check the issue status.

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Disable-antivirus-software

Note: Antivirus software can help protect your computer against viruses and other security threats. In most cases, you should not disable your antivirus software. If you do have to temporarily disable it to install other software, you should re-enable it as soon as you're done. If you are connected to the Internet or a network during the time your antivirus software is disabled, your computer is vulnerable to attacks.

Hope this helps you. Please do let us know if you need further help.

Problem solved. I used Microsoft Fix it, like you suggested. It didn't seem to do much the first time, so I shut down the computer (force quit again) and restarted, then re-ran Microsoft Fix it. After the second time, I ran Windows Update again, and only two updates appeared, which I was able to download and install without a problem. My update history shows that I downloaded and installed those first five updates six times in total. The one that appeared to cause the problem (update 6 of 12) was Microsoft .NET Framework for Windows 7 x64-based Systems (KB2901985). Thanks for your help, Ganesh. You are as mighty as your name!

Thanks for your reply. I use Norton Antivirus Online. No, I made no changes to the computer before trying to download the Windows updates.
