Hello, When I start up my laptop -windows 8.1- my internet security (webroot secure anywhere) puts up a window that asks if I would allow webroot to make changes to my computer, which I've been responding to with "yes". I've assumed that this will allow webroot to properly secure my computer. Is that correct? thanks ******@verizon.net

    Hi Robert,

Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community.

I can understand that you are concerned about your system's security and would certainly guide you in the right direction regarding your concern.

Webroot is a third party anti-virus software and affects your system security. Microsoft does not recommend any third party security software as the associated third party firewalls might create issues for the network connections with the system.

You may use Webroot for your system security, however, we do not recommend you any third party software for security purposes.

Disclaimer: Using Third Party Software, including hardware drivers can cause serious problems that may prevent your computer from booting properly. Microsoft cannot guarantee that any problems resulting from the use of Third Party Software can be solved. Using Third Party Software is at your own risk.

Hope this information is helpful. Do let us know if you need any further assistance, we'll be glad to assist you.

You should feel free to use whatever malware protection you think is appropriate.  For most people, the built-in Windows firewall and Defender are adequate.   You should not feel that it's urgent to remove the Webroot software.  Harkanwar's statement that "Webroot is a third-party anti-virus software and affects your system security"  is true, but trivially so.  All antimalware programs "affect your system security."  That's what they're supposed to do.  If he's suggesting that it affects your system security in a negative way, he will need to provide some evidence to support the claim.

    Hi Robert,

I second Jim's statement, All antimalware programs "affect your system security." but as further discussed for most people, the built-in Windows firewall and Defender are adequate. Anti-virus software or any other kind of anti-malware firewalls (Microsoft or third party) affect the system files and settings in a way to protect the system. However, any data files that are infected may only be cleaned by deleting the file entirely, which means there is a potential for data loss. So, you are free to use whichever malware or spyware protection suits best for your system.

Hope this information is helpful. Please feel free to post in case you get any other issues with Windows in future, we'll be glad to assist you.

You'll have to uninstall AVG.  Defender and the Windows firewall should be active automatically after you uninstall AVG and reboot.

I am unable to access Windows Defender to make it the primary firewall. Currently AVG Antivirus free edition is in charge. I wish to make Windows defender #1.
