To see Network Adapters included on your machine look in the Device Manager under Network Adapters.

    Where is Device Manager?

Device Manager Information for Windows 8

    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=au&lc=en&docname=c03540049

Do you have anything listed under Network Adapters that resembles ASIX - LAN - ASIX AX88772B USB2.0?

It is up to you whether you allow Windows update it or not. While it is probably OK to allow this update you are relying on Windows to supply a correct hardware driver update.

If you want to stop Windows Updates for installing drivers see this article. It is wise to check a manufacturer's site for drivers before using Windows to update drivers.

Automatically Updates Drivers in Windows 8

If you switch off Automatic Updates and set them up to not download and only notify you then it is possible to hide a troublesome update. After doing such a thing you may return to your normal Automatic Update settings.

If it helps you to make up your mind, I have the same suggested optional update but believe this to be a mis-identified update as no such hardware appears to exit. I also have never used an external USB2 to ethernet device which this could be targetted at. Also there is no LAN hardware only wireless built-in (Standard Intel 3160). There is no unidentified or failed hardware devices in device manager. It would be nice to know what identified hardware ID this update believes might need an up date (Microsoft, can you add this to the update info maybe as an additional info button or link?).

More info at the moment responds with: (http://sysdev.microsoft.com/en-GB/Hardware/support/default.aspx)

    Driver Information

    Driver Information: Coming Soon

Thank you for using Windows Update. The
More information feature is not available yet. We apologize for any inconvenience.
---
---

My decision so far is to ignore the update, as I do not wish to go down the route of installing it to see what hardware it wants to update and then having to clear up any potential ensuing mess. I could take time to do a full backup, test and restore if no good, but if Microsoft just supply the targetted hardware ID, this level of action might not be required.
