Graphics Driver Crahes When using Google Chrome

Hi,

Today I have been having problems with my Gigabte Q2550 laptop. So far the issue has only occured when using Google Chrome. Its happened twice, both times I was surfing the web with Chrome with 4 tabs open.

First the screen freezes for a minute or two, then it blinks, then it comes back to normal but a pop up keeps on saying "Intel HD Graphics Driver for Windows 8 has stopped responding but has successfully recovered." I close the popup but it just keeps popping up again and again until I restart the computer.

In the event viewer, there are about 20 errors. First around 10 "Display driver igfx stopped responding and has successfully recovered." errors, then around another 10 "Application chrome.exe has been blocked from accessing Graphics hardware." errors.

My drivers are up to date as far as my manuafacturers website goes (see here), but the Intel site says to install some Iris suite, which I haven't done.

I haven't been able to reproduce the issue without opening Google Chrome (IE works fine) and I play games like Minecraft and Euro Truck Sim 2 fine.

Here are my system specs:

CPU: Intel Pentium Quad-Core N3520 2.166GHz(Turbo 2.42GHz)

64 bit OS: Windows 8.1 64bit

RAM: 4GB DDR3 1600

HDD: 500GB SATA

Graphic: Intel HD 4400 Graphics Integrated VGA (Intel® HD Graphics 10.18.103621 Driver)

Screen: 15.6” (1366x768) Non-Glare Screen

Expansion: Gigabit Lan *D-Sub *HDMI *Numeric KeyPad

*WiFi N *Bluetooth V4.0*Card Reader*DVD Writer *USB3.0*2.2kg

My laptop is just under 6 months old and has 2 years warranty. Thanks for your help!

    Hi Joshua,

     Welcome to Microsoft Community.

It tends to crop up when your system's memory runs low as well as when running graphically intensive software applications such as video games.

As you already installed latest drivers from manufacturer’s website, try installing Iris Suite from Intel website.

I would suggest you to try each of the following methods listed in the order listed, until a solution is found:

    Method 1:

Locate and install the latest graphics driver from your computer or motherboard manufacturer.

Your computer manufacturer might have altered the features, incorporated customizations, or made other changes to the graphics driver to support your computer. So go to the manufacturer’s website and Intel website to download the latest Graphics Drivers.

    Method 2:

Find and install the latest generic version of the Intel Graphics Driver.

If you install the latest driver from your computer or motherboard manufacturer and still encounter the problem, try the latest generic driver. To locate and install a newer generic graphics driver if applicable, Refer the below link:

    http://www.intel.com/p/en_US/support/detect

    Method 3:

Update the Microsoft* .NET Framework software on your computer:

Some issues (such as the stopped responding/successfully recovered error message) can be fixed with a simple update to the systems .NET Framework* software. Refer the below link:

    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=30653

    Method 4:

Ensure that Operating System is up to date:

Download the latest updates available for your operating system with the Windows Update and be sure to reboot your system afterwards for proper installation. Refer the below article:

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/windows-update

If the issue continues after performing the above methods, I would suggest you to check with the Chrome Support. As this issue is specifically causing on Chrome, try uninstalling and reinstalling the software. Refer the link below for Download and support on Chrome:

    Download and install Google Chrome

If Chrome still will not work, you may post in the Google community forum listed below:

Hope the information helps. Keep us posted if you face any issues on windows in future. We will be glad to help you.

    Thanks for your help Annu.

I have resolved this issue by turning off 'Use hardware acceleration when available' in Chrome settings.

The problem immedientely started when Google Chrome installed an update, and I found similar problems have occured before with Chrome.

I have now switched to Vivaldi Browser, I like the design better and its not so full of bugs like Chrome.

    Thanks again,

    Josh
