KB3033929 fails to install and cause a minor "infinite" loop

I'm having problems with the KB3033929 update from the latest run of Tuesday patches. After installation the PC reboots, but during the boot up configuration of the patch it fails and Windows starts reverting the configuration and reboots. And then it starts all over again a couple of times until it eventually boot into Windows. I looked into Windows' setup logs and found the following:

  • A reboot is necessary before package KB3033929 can be changed to the Installed state.
  • Package KB3033929 failed to be changed to the Installed state. Status: 0x80004005.
  • Initiating changes for package KB3033929. Current state is Invalid Installed. Target state is Staged. Client id: WindowsUpdateAgent.
  • Package KB3033929 was successfully changed to the Staged state.

So what is wrong?

    @Shodan2k only! =>

    1. What is the full name of your installed anti-virus application or security suite and when (approx. date) does your current subscription expire? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender) are installed? What third-party firewall (if any)?
    2. Has a(nother) Norton application or a McAfee application EVER been installed on the computer since you bought it?
    3. Did a Norton free-trial or a McAfee free-trial [PICK ONE] come preinstalled on the computer when you bought it? (Doesn't matter if you never used or Activated it.)

    **<EDIT>**4. Is GNU GRUB boot loader installed?

    </EDIT>

    Thanks michaelp52. I had the exact same situation with GRUB as the bootloader and that indeed worked perfectly. Even simpler to bring up the BIOS bootmenu to do the "one-time" boots directly into Win7. Avoids needing to change the BIOS setting.

    I would like to thank michaelp52 on the advice. I think it really works. All my workstations configured with GRUP as a bootloader recovered as soon as I changed the boot order.
