update issue on HP running Windows 7 - KB3033929

I'm running Windows 7 on an HP p6204y desktop computer. I am able to install all the important updates except KB3033929. It installs initially but causes the computer not to restart requiring startup repair to run which restores the computer to the set point created at installation which in effect nullifies the installation not to mention creating angst and hassle in the process especially as it was 1 out of 21 updates requiring me to install 1 at a time until I was able to identify the culprit. Any ideas why?

    Hello Rosswell,

Thank you for posting your query on Microsoft Community.

I can understand the inconvenience caused to you. I will certainly help you with this update issue.

However, I would require some more information to assist you better.

What is the error code/message of that failing update in Windows Update history?

I would like to inform you that some users cannot install this security update (KB3033929) if their computers meet the following conditions:

    • Have a multiple-boot configuration of Windows and various distributions of Linux.

    • Use a non-Windows boot loader.

    • Have Windows and Linux installed on separate drives.

I would suggest you to follow the steps mentioned below in the Microsoft article:

Microsoft security advisory: Availability of SHA-2 code signing support for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2: March 10, 2015

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3033929

Important: Modifying BIOS/ complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) settings incorrectly can cause serious problems that may prevent your computer from booting properly. Microsoft cannot guarantee that any problems resulting from the configuring of BIOS/CMOS settings can be solved. Modifications of the settings are at your own risk.

Hope this information helps. Let us know if you need further assistance with Windows related issues, we’ll be glad to assist you.

    Thank you

Thanks for the reply. As far as I know the computer doesn't meet any of the conditions you mentioned that would cause the problem. A web search turned up several cases of people with the same issue so I'm assuming that the problem lies in the software itself rather than my computer. With that I hope that Microsoft can resolve it soon so I can update my computer. Please keep me informed of any development in that direction.
