Did you try to use "open with" on a shortcut? Can you open programs from the executable?

It really sounds as if you accidently associated your .lnk extensions to adobe acrobat. This creates a users choice default on all of your shortcut links to adobe acrobat.

Since the default action is caused by a user choice (inadvertant as it was), you may be able to restore simply by creating a new user account. See if the icons return to their natural state and now work. If so, just move all of your files and folders over and delete the old account. If you use Outlook you may also have to reset where it looks for the Outlook files, but it might be automatic (don't try starting Outlook until everything is copied over though). If you use this method, don't forget to copy the hidden appdata folder. Just unhide everything before you start the copy.

The other method that requires a regedit is also fairly simple, but recommend you set a manual restore point before starting. A regedit always has the potential to mess up your system. procedures are:

  1. Click Start Menu, and then type regedit in the Start Search and press ENTER.
  2. Navigate to the following registry branch:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\FileExts[ext]

Replace the [ext] with the actual file extension that you want to restore its file type association to revert back to original Windows 7 default (probably .lnk). If you unsure, simply browse through all the sub-key under FileExts.

      3.    Delete the sub-key named UserChoice.

      4.    Exit from Registry Editor.

Theoretically, either method will work.

    Good Evening

I have a similar problem.  I download a zip file and Acrobat jumps in to tell me that it is unable to open the file.  I followed the recommendations above but when I got to \FileExts\ there was no [ext] to replace with .lnk.  Also, I found no sub-key called UserChoice in FileExts.

I was hoping that your elegant solution worked for me.  Please advise.

    Thank you.
