You don't need Notepad to install the driver, but if you merely want to see the contents of the *.inf file, you can:

    • right-click and select "Open" and it should open in Notepad
    • Open an empty Notepad window and drag'n'drop the *.inf file into the Notepad window
    • Open an empty Notepad window, click File > Open. select "All files (*)" from the drop-down list, browse to the *.inf file, and click Open

To actually install the driver, you can either right-click on the *.inf file and select "Install" or go to Device Manager

    • double-click the entry for the device
    • select the "Driver" tab
    • click "Update driver"
    • click "Browse my computer for driver software"
    • click "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer"
    • Click "Have Disk"
    • Browse to the location of the *.inf file and click OK

You're being to economical with your description.  I really don't understand what it is that you are trying to do or what your issue(s) may be.

What edition of Windows do you have?

    • If you mean that when your right-click on a *.inf file you don't see ANYmenu, does this behavior also occur for all other file extensions?  For example:
      • What happens if you right-click on an empty spot on your Desktop?
      • What happens if you right-click on a *.txt or *.doc or *.jpg file?
    • What driver(s) are you trying to install?
    • Why?
    • What is the make and model of your computer?
    • Where did you obtain this "driver disk"?
    • Please explain what you mean by "a double image of the whole page."
    • Please explain what you mean by "the ones [drivers] that are [installed] do not show up when I try to install them in Device Manager."
    • What are the steps you take to produce this "list of numbers, about sixty"?

Assuming that you have some variety to Windows 7 (because you asked your question in a Windows 7 forum), you have the very handy Snipping Tool.

    • Do what ever you do to get the "list of numbers, about sixty" and then click Start and type "Snipping Tool" (without quotes) and press Enter.  The screen will dim and the little Snipping Tool window will open.
    • Click your mouse on one corner of the window where the "list of numbers" is shown and while keeping the mouse button depressed drag the mouse to the diagonally-opposite corner of the window and release the mouse button.
    • Click the "Save" icon in the Snipping Tool window (or File > Save as) and save the file.  Make a note of the name that you give to the file (the default is capture.jpg) and the location where you save it.
    • In your next Reply here, click the "Insert Image" icon (second from right).  Click the Browse button, navigate to where you saved your captured screen image, select it, and click Open.  Click the "Upload" button.

    Hello LemP,

Thanks for your reply. When I right click on a driver file-nothing,when I double click I get a double image of the whole page. The disk has drivers that are not installed already, the ones that are do not show up when I try to install them in Device Manager. What shows is a list of numbers, about sixty, and God only knows what they are,as the drivers are not named.

Anyway,I do thank you for trying your best to sort it out for me.

                                                                                                                        Regards,

                                                                                                                                  Stewart Doran.

That is where the problem lies. When I double click all I get is a double image of the file I am clicking. I have a driver update disk,I cannot get into it to install the drivers.

Many thanks for taking the time to answer my question.

                                                                                            Regards,
