Cannot Run Microsoft Support Diagnostic Tools without a "passkey provided by your support professional"--PLEASE issue me one OR help me find one!

I'm running authentic Windows 7 Home Premium SP1, with 8 GB of RAM.

I keep being told that I need a "passkey provided by your support professional" when I try to run most of the "Microsoft Support Diagnostic Tools."

I have spent hours looking at many of the Microsoft support pages but NONE have been helpful telling me how or where to get this illusive "passkey provided by your support professional" so I thought I would post this in the hopes of being helped by someone.

Microsoft, if you are listening, there have been many requests for this same information that have gone completely UNANSWERED and without even a single reply from any Microsoft personnel. Come on, YOU can do BETTER than this!

I have no idea why your software keeps asking me for this passkey in order to run only some but not all of the "Microsoft Support Diagnostic Tools" but I really would like it to NEVER ask for this as it means that if I want or need to use your "Microsoft Support Diagnostic Tools" I CANNOT use them unless I contact Microsoft support to ask for a "Support Key" which is NOT an easy task to do AND I should not have to pay $100 for tech support from some third party you all outsource to in order to get this "passkey." It is time-consuming and I wish I could just run the automated "Microsoft Support Diagnostic Tools" on my own.

MY RECOMMENDATION:

Microsoft you should have an automated site where an end-user can go and request AND receive a "Support Key" to run these "Microsoft Support Diagnostic Tools" WITHOUT needing to contact you all or spend hours of wasted time searching your websites.

There you have it. Can you please issue me a "Microsoft Support Diagnostic Tool Support Key" so I can run the Aero "Microsoft Support Diagnostic Tool" since it stopped working?

Sincerely,

How does this help anyone. It's like saying to someone asking for assistance because their msdt.exe doesn't work with - "oh, just run the diagnostics tool to fix it". This is no help at all! We need a direct link to download a new msdt.exe + package and no one seems to know where it is.

    Sorry - Frustrated

Gee, thanks for the help (note the sarcasm here)  -I followed your directions and tried running a "self-help" troubleshooter and got the same old response......problems detected "try to run as administrator" and then a request for the passkey.

It annoys me that Microsoft would put this diagnostic software on my system and then not allow me to use it - can I delete it?? Not waste the space?

    Patrick,

Users can access the built-in support tools at Control panel, [View by - Small icons, if necessary[, Troubleshooting.

Microsoft do not allow us to use MSDT unless it forms part of a support case being handled by them or their agents.  That's why nobody has suggested any direct solution to the original question.

    Hello Traveler4God

You certainly make valid points in your post concerning the ability to run msdt.exe (Microsoft Support Diagnostic Tool), but the tool's functionality has been provided mainly in view of allowing Microsoft Support Professionals to assist users, which is why it first requires one to contact Microsoft Support and obtain a valid passkey. Nevertheless, Microsoft has provided tools that a self-reliant user such as you so obviously are can utilize to troubleshoot problems. Have you tried initiating a session at the Self-help section of the Microsoft Support Diagnostics site? There are many helpful tool packages available there to any user with a free Microsoft Account (formerly known as a Windows Live ID, Passport, etc. - the account one must have to post in these forums, in other words). A user simply needs to follow the site's directions "To create a new diagnostic session, select a diagnostic package from the list below"; the "Learn More" links below each package will open the Knowledge Base article applicable to the particular troubleshooting package one selects, which typically provide useful insight as well as information (such as search terms) that can be used to further research a problem. There's some more information available in the KB2672837 article "Microsoft Diagnostics Services—Self-Help diagnostic portal".  Hope this helps, and that you enjoy successful troubleshooting!
