How to fix missing driver error and registry from recreating itself at boot.

Hi all,

I have a missing driver error in Autoruns and I want to find out how to fix it and find the process triggering it so I can get rid of it.

If I delete the registry Autoruns no longer flags it but if I restart Autoruns will once again flag it and the registry will be located again in the same location

The error: cpuz137 File not found: C:\Users\xxxx\AppData\Local\Temp\cpuz137\cpuz137_x64.sys

There is no such cpuz137 folder in the AppData/Local/Temp folder nor is the driver in the system32/driver folder.

It looks like it's a driver for CPU-Z but I am pretty sure I never had version 1.37 installed as that is from 2006 AFAIK I have had the ASUS ROG versions from 1.67 or 1.68 to the current 1.72.1_ROG.

This is what it looks like in the Event Viewer when the PC boots each time.

A service was installed in the system.

Service Name:  cpuz138

Service File Name:  C:\Users\xxxxxx\AppData\Local\Temp\cpuz138\cpuz138_x64.sys

Service Type:  kernel mode driver

Service Start Type:  demand start

Service Account:

Anyone know how to track what is telling my PC to start the service or process?

Thanks for helping guys!

Hi,

Thank you for the update.

There could be possibility of both system file being corrupted/missing or malware as well.

  • What was the result of system file checker tool?

I would also suggest you to run Microsoft Safety Scanner and check for any malware.

The Microsoft Safety Scanner is a free downloadable security tool that provides on-demand scanning and helps remove viruses, spyware, and other malicious software. It works with your existing antivirus software.

Microsoft Safety Scanner

**Note:**The Microsoft Safety Scanner expires 10 days after being downloaded. To rerun a scan with the latest anti-malware definitions, download and run the Microsoft Safety Scanner again.

**Note:**Any data files that are infected may only be cleaned by deleting the file entirely, which means there is a potential for data loss.

Hope this information is helpful. Please feel free to reply in case you face any other issues with Windows in future.

After doing a fresh install of Windows 10 and seeing the same entry in my registry it came to me and I remembered that I deleted the folder cpuz137 in my AppData folder.

I uninstalled CPU-Z in Windows 8.1 and thought it was a previous installation of CPU-Z so I deleted the folder one day cleaning out left over files. The folder is back there in Windows 10 I haven't even installed CPU-Z that is what jogged my memory of deleting the folder.

The error doesn't come up in Autoruns anymore.

    Thanks for your help.

I want to know what is actually trying to run the missing driver? The application isn't there so is it malware?
