Windows Defender Error Code 0x800106ba

I have a 64 Bit Dell T7400 Precision machine; with Windows 10 Build 10525 installed.

Windows Defender will not complete a 'FULL Scan' but will eventually terminate with an Error Code 0x800106ba; and Defender will then also be disabled and requires manual restarting.

This behavior has been noted since about Build 10130 of the Insiders Program.

I've sent several 'screen shots' of the end result to Microsoft Feedback; but to date no resolution seems to be available; and the issue persists.

Any thoughts what the 'bottom line' problem is here??

Not being able to do a 'FULL Scan' seems to me to be a major issue; but it has apparently escaped resolution thus far.....

I do NOT note this behavior on a 32 Bit Version of Defender and Windows 10; installed on a Gateway Laptop.  Is this a machine specific issue or a 64 Bit O/S issue??

    Hi Yumpin,

Thank you for posting on Microsoft Communities.

I appreciate your interest in Windows 10. We sincerely regret for the inconvenience caused.

The 0x800106ba error may occur after Windows Defender is updated due to the computer’s inability to update the Windows Defender firewall. It may not have applicable permissions needed for the update, or it may not have the files necessary for updating itself.

    Method 1:

Set Windows Defender to Automatic - You can set the Windows Defender service to Automatic, Disabled or Manual. Setting it to automatic might solve the problem. Follow these steps:

    1. Click Start > type services in the Search box > click Services in the Programs list.
    2. Search for Windows defender.
    3. Double-click Windows Defender, and click Automatic in the start-up box > click OK.

    Method 2:

Uninstall and reinstall Windows Defender - If the first procedure did not help resolve the problem, try un-installing and then reinstalling Windows Defender. Due to the fact that Windows Defender is a Windows component, we will use AppWiz to un-install it from the computer. Follow these steps:

    1. Press Windows Key + R > type appwiz.cpl > Press Enter
    2. Click Windows Defender > click Remove
    3. Follow the prompts to uninstall Windows Defender

Please let us know if you need further assistance.

    Thank you.

    Hi Yumpin,

    This reply is, unfortunately, useless.

There is no such thing as a Windows Defender firewall and Windows Defender cannot be uninstalled/reinstalled in Windows 10.

The error is due to a problem with the scan engine and a memory leak with all products using MSMPENG.exe as explained below. Note that in Windows 10, the option to not scan compressed archives does not exist in the interface. So, the workaround is to not perform a full scan with Defender and/or to exclude large known archive files (.ISO, .RAR, etc) from being scanner, preferably by excluding locations and not file types.

The following workaround does not apply to Defender on Windows 10:

A recent post by mchampfl on page 11 of this long running thread - http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/protect/forum/mse-protect\_scanning/microsoft-security-essentials-error-code/d8d69ac3-ca4a-40ae-9c0d-15c97e64cea3?page=11&tm=1441106019496

    • suggests that MSE is having problems with large compressed/zipped archive files due to the fact that MSE needs to open these in memory to scan them.  The crash, resulting in 0x800106ba can be avoided, per that reply, by disabling the scanning of compressed archives in MSE settings.

I have done all this. When I go to try and find Windows Defender in the second step there is no Windows Defender listed. Windows Essentials is still listed and it wont let me uninstall it because it will also uninstall other apps.

So now what do you suggest. I still cant get my Windows Defender to work right and feel my computer is unprotected.

This has been that way ever since downloading Windows 10. Which seems to have problems after problems. I dont  care for it all. Microsoft real needs to get all bugs worked out before releasing something. I waiting as long as I could to download this.

    Hi Yumpin,

Thank you for contacting Microsoft Community.

We apologize for not being able to address your concern in a timely manner. I would like to inform you that Windows Defender is an inbuilt program in Windows 10 which help protecting your PC.

The issue which you've mentioned usually arises when you have installed a security software on your computer. From Windows 8 onwards, the Windows Defender is equipped with all the functionalities of an anti-virus software including real-time protection which was not present in Windows Defender in Windows 7.

If you have any third-party security software installed, I would suggest you to uninstall that software and then upgrade to Windows 10. As it is not recommended to keep more than 1 anti-virus software with real-time protection.

Important Note: Antivirus software can help protect your computer against viruses and other security threats. In most cases, you shouldn't disable/uninstall your antivirus software. If you have to temporarily disable/uninstall it to install other software, you should re-enable it as soon as you're done. If you're connected to the Internet or a network while your antivirus software is disabled, your computer is vulnerable to attacks.

Whenever you install a third-party security software in Windows 8.1 or Windows 10, it automatically disables Windows Defender to avoid conflicts.

Hope this information was helpful. Do notify us with the updated status and we'll be glad to help.

    Thanks for reply.

If I un-install Defender, where do I get a new version to 're-install.'

I have searched the Internet, and do not see where I can get a new copy of Defender to download and install; at least from a Microsoft link.

I don't want to get the program from a non-Microsoft link; and I don't want to uninstall before have a replacement install package in hand prior to uninstall.

The start-up was already set as 'automatic.'
