I had this same situation and I tried your solution. I pressed Ctrl Alt Delete and clicked switch user and tried to log back in and it would start to log in but then it would take me back to the log in screen. I only have one user profile so I am not sure why it would not allow me to log in, but after a few attempts I decided to try restarting my computer from the shut down options menu on the login screen. It restarted and I logged in and my desktop loaded normally without any problems!

I had read a few other comments about this problem and was worried it might not be fixable. So, thank you so much for such a simple solution!

Exactly the same thing happened to me... I'm no expert by far but I had a mess around & found a simple solution:  press Ctrl & Alt buttons together & hold, then press the Del button & release all... this will bring up a menu... select 'switch user' ... walla!!! prob solved!! (hopefully)

Good luck & if you find this helps you out of the frustrating situation, please come back & click on the 'Found this helpful, Me Too tab to let me know ;) x

    Hi,

    1. Which updates were installed recently?
    2. Are you able to browse files on your computer after you reach the desktop?

**Method 1.**Let us first check if the issue exists in safe mode.  If the issue does not occur in safe mode we can perform the clean boot troubleshooting to find the root cause.

    **Step A.**a. Restart your computer.

    b. When the computer starts you will see your computer's hardware being listed. When you see this information gently tap the F8 key on your keyboard repeatedly until you are presented with the Windows 7 Advanced Boot Options screen.

    c. Using the arrow keys, select the Safe Mode option you want.

    d. Then press the enter key on your keyboard to boot into Windows 7 Safe Mode.

    e. When Windows starts you will be at a typical logon screen. Logon to your computer and Windows 7 will enter Safe mode.

    f. Do whatever tasks you require, and when you are done, reboot to go back into normal mode.

    Step B.

If it works fine in safe mode try performing a clean boot to find the root cause.

Refer to the article below for steps about how to start your computer in clean boot state.

How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7

Note: When the troubleshooting is over do not forget to reset the computer to normal startup. Follow the step 7 in the above article.

    Method 2.

If the above method does not help create a new user account in safe mode and check, If it resolves the issue fix the corrupt user profile.

    Create a user account

If the issue does not occur in the new user account fix your corrupted user account. The steps to fix the corrupt user account are given below.

    Fix a corrupted user profile.

**Method 3.**Also you may try the system restore and check.

    Hope it helps.
