I had the same issue, killed the browser from the control panel and then opened it again via the search pane looking for google.com.  I then deleted the first tab.

If that doesn't work for you, you may want to try first disabling your internet access, i.e. turn off wifi or disconnect the ethernet cable so the page can't load, then delete the tab that tries to open.

I hope I never see that one.

    (1) R-Clk START or R-Clk the clock, & select Task Manager.

    (2) R-Clk Microsoft Edge in the Apps list, & select End Task.

Then, quickly update definitions, & run your anti-virus.

Consider switching to a different anti-virus app, if it finds nothing.

Also, get the Malicious Software Removal Tool from...

Had the same problem. None of the above worked or was already set correctly.

Hit ctrl alt del to get Task Manager and ended the Edge task to close browser.

Reopened browser and it reloaded the window complete with popup.

However after repeating this a few times the browser finally, instead of the offending

window, displayed a message 'This page has failed to load'.

This has happened to me a few times and it has worked every time.

    But it's ridiculous.

Thought we left such problems behind a decade ago. Apparently not.

This happened to me. I was just going to ebay unless I mis-typed it.  Reboots or killing Edge didn't work.  I had to open Internet Explorer.  Just do a search with Cortana to find it.  Then when IE comes up, click on the Try Edge link.  This brought up a new window in Edge and I was able to go to settings delete all of the items that had an option to put a check mark on.  Seemed to fix it for me.

In reply to all who think this is an Edge problem. I have had the same result on a Windows 10 machine using

Firefox and Google Chrome. It first appeared when using Firefox. This appears to be some malware resident on the Win 10 machine. Each time the offending URL is different. I plan to throw every anti virus program I can at it. Started with Malware Bytes which did not detect it.

Task manager can be used to close the browser when it strikes, restarting the browser will bring it back. Reboot  the operating system and then restart the browser to get temporary respite,  but it will be back!
