Battery Disabled notification in the computer.

My Dell Inspiron (64bit- Win 7) is always on AC Adaptor but after defrag, a warning popped up " "Battery is temporarily disabled. Turn off computer and wait till cools down to operational temperature."  After several hours off and still on AC power, the Battery Status Lights blink white-to-amber.  It boots properly with the same message appearing over the systems tool bar.  The meter now shows "0%, not charging." However, device manager shows no problems with the battery.  My second step was to check out Dell.support.  The web site found and recommended installing a BIOS file.  However, upon installing, it discontinued because "cannot download until battery is 10% charged."  Please tell me the problem and solution?  Are there any dire consequences if I do not act quickly on your recommendation? ? Thank you in advance.  (PS computer is 15 months old.)

I tried this also with no result.  I found that I would have to do the following steps.

    1.   Turn off laptop and disconnect AC adapter.
    2.   Remove battery and re-connect the AC adapter.
    3.   Power on the laptop using the AC adapter.
    4.   Open the device manager.  Select 'Batteries'.
    5.   Right-click on 'Microsoft AC adapter', then select 'Uninstall'.
    6.   Right-click on 'Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Method Battery', then select 'Uninstall'.
    7.   Close the 'Device Manager' and power off the laptop.
    8.   Re-install the battery and plug in the AC adapter.
    9.   Power on the laptop.  The AC adapters will re-install themselves on start up.
    10. The laptop battery will then start charging.

Regretfully, if there is a power outage or you unplug the AC adapter; you will have to repeat the process.

    Hope this helps.

    Hello Kudrik,

    Thank you for your response.

I appreciate your efforts towards resolving the issue.

    Did you try updating BIOS?

If not, I would suggest you to update BIOS from manufacturer's website and check if it helps.

If it does not help, then please get in touch with the computer's manufacturer.

Note: Modifying BIOS/ complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) settings incorrectly can cause serious problems that may prevent your computer from booting properly. Microsoft cannot guarantee that any problems resulting from the configuring of BIOS/CMOS settings can be solved. Modifications of the settings are at your own risk.

    Thank you

I had the "battery charging is temporarily disabled" that so many other have had. (I think the AC plug came out and battery ran down.) I found no one posting a solution----including Dell. Putting together some suggestions but not from people that said they succeeded, I tried a combination of things and got mine to work again. Here is what I did that worked for me. I expect some steps, like 4 and 5, may not be necessary, but they didn't hurt either.

     1) Shut down computer and disconnected charger and Ethernet

    1. Removed battery and held power button 30 seconds to drain all charge from computer
    2. Plugged in charger
    3. Started computer on AC Power (worked OK)
    4. Shut down computer
    5. Disconnected Charger and held power button 30 seconds to drain all charge from computer (waited a little while before next step just to be sure)
    6. Installed battery
    7. Connected charger (charging light showed that now charging)
    8. Waited for battery to completely recharge (charging light out)
    9. Started computer. (All well and back to normal at this point)

Hope this helps someone else and they can confirm that this works for for them and for other situations of the failure.
