Hi. After updating to 8.1 , I tried to create system image but it failed giving me error code 0x80040154 with "Class not registered".

So anybody got any ideas.

It seems error codes give you hope to find answers but usually to no avail.

    Solution:

There was a change between Windows 8 to 8.1 that causes this to happen.  The workaround is to format the blank media, just use the default format when prompted to choose a type.

Note: you will still get the error after the format, but it will only occur once and will not stop the system image from being created.  Just click ok after the error appears and watch the progress bar continue to progress.  Problem solved.

Hi I am too not going to boot into safe mode as I to am unsure about this. For normal average everyday user this is unacceptable.

They give you error code but as usual this means little , just wonder why they bother giving these codes if it doesn't lead anywhere.

I have created system image with Macrium Reflect ( free )- no problem !

I asked original question but as usual Microsoft goes missing with fixing a problem.

I have just bought a new pc which had windows 8 installed on it and have just updated to 8.1 today.  I created a system image dvd backup on windows 8 no problem but when i updated and wanted to do system image back up onto dvd for 8.1 i too have this error message appear (An error occurred, Class not registered (0x080040154), Close Windows Backup and try again) stopping me from creating a backup.

I don't understand how it worked fine in 8.0 but not 8.1.  The only software i have is what was bundled with my pc and a chrome browser.  I have updated nero 12 which came with the pc which i thought may help since im burning a disc but the error message still appears so i'm thinking it may be a Microsoft software conflict as my computer is new and hasn't much software on it.

I haven't tried a clean boot as mentioned as im not confident messing around with the settings. I just want to turn it on and for things to work.  The computer is for home use only and not connected to a network/domain or anything.

Will Microsoft be issuing a fix for this error message?

    Thanks

    Kevin

    Hi Shiv,

Thanks for contacting the Microsoft community.

It would help if you could let us know if the computer is connected to a domain.

I would suggest that you perform a Clean boot and then try to create a system image. A clean boot helps to eliminate software conflicts and to determine what is causing the problem. Perform a clean boot on the computer by following the steps given in the link:

How to perform a clean boot to troubleshoot a problem in Windows 8, Windows 7, or Windows Vista

Note: Refer "How to reset the computer to start as usual after troubleshooting with clean boot" under more information to reset the computer to start as normal after troubleshooting.
