Windows 8 touchpad not working (not recognized)

I just bought an HP laptop 2 months ago, and it came with Windows 8 already installed.

What happened:

My touchpad was working fine last night, but I was using an USB mouse before I shut down the laptop. This morning when I open it without the USB mouse, I got stuck on a grey screen (it didn't even reach the start up screen yet) so I manually shut it down again and then restarted it, it then showed me a "please wait windows is updating" screen, so I waited.

After that the touchpad (as well as its left-click and right-click buttons) stopped working. I can't even see a cursor on the screen. I tried plugging in my USB mouse, and it still works fine.

What I tried to do:

  • When I go toDevice Manager, in "mice and other pointing devices", only the USB mouse is shown. When I unplug the USB mouse, there is no "mice and other pointing devices" category. So I don't think my touchpad is being recognized by the laptop anymore.
  • When I use Troubleshoot Hardware and Devices, it says:

"Problems found

Hardware changes might not have been detected..........Detected..........[yellow triangle with an exclamation mark in it]"

How do I fix this?

I have the exact same problem with my Acer laptop. The issue is that there is no Touchpad Device available in my laptop now.

This happened as soon as I installed windows 10. No matter how many times you download the drivers from the official brand website, the drivers have nowhere to go, so they show up as Unknown devices in the subtitle, Other devices.

The only way of getting my touchpad back to half its use, is to press Fn and F2 on startup and change the touchpad settings to basic. I have no zoom or duel finger scroll, just the bog standard mouse pad.

I still do not have the Touchpad Device in my laptop so the official drivers off Acer's website do not do a thing.

I believe this is exatly the same issue for you Mangomanga.

Does anyone know how to get the Touchpad Device back into Device manager, if so a quick reply would be greatly appreciated?

    Thank you,

    Matt

    Dear PranavMishra5582

The device I am working on is the:

    PackardBell Win 8.1

    EasyNote TE11HC_064B_V2.15

I tried "method 1" and "method 2" isn't an option, because the "touchpad option" isn't even showing to enable the touchpad.

I have since reinstalled the item after finding there were 3 choices, installing all till one was accepted.

I didn't get the chance to screenshot of the "mouse properties" without the installed Elantech Touchpad Tools.

The other Touchpad Tools were; Alps or Synaptics, none of these were able to attach themselves to this device.

The Elan is attached, if you look in the images above, you will notice, "Options" are not available, which is now my problem to help push to the next level of attaching into the "Device Manager".

I am wondering if there were a problem with the enable buttons (f6) and/or (fn + f6).

Is it possible for a few buttons to stop perfoming?

    I think that is possible.

    Hi,

Thank you for giving us an opportunity to assist you with this issue.

It looks that you are unable to use the touchpad of your computer with Windows 8. I appreciate the efforts which you have put to resolve the issue.

Let me ask you a question.

    1. What is the make and model of your computer?
    2. Did you make any changes to your computer prior to this issue?

You may face this issue if the touchpad driver is not installed or has gone corrupt. Follow the methods given here to resolve the issue.

Method 1: Place the computer in Clean boot and check for the issue.

Place the computer in a clean boot state and then check if it helps. You can start Windows by using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. This kind of startup is known as a "clean boot." A clean boot helps eliminate software conflicts.

Note: Please go through the section: How to reset the computer to start as usual after troubleshooting with clean boot of the Kb article to boot the computer in normal startup after fixing the issue.

Method 2: Uninstall the Touchpad Driver and reinstall from the manufacturer’s website.

I would like to request you to please uninstall the Touchpad Driver and reinstall it back once again. Please follow the steps given below to uninstall the Touchpad Driver.

    a) Press Windows key + X key when you are at desktop.

    b) Select Device Manager.

    c) Find and double-click Touchpad Driver from the left panel to uninstall

    d) Right-click the device, and click Uninstall.

    e) Windows will prompt you to confirm the device’s removal. Click OK to remove the driver.

    f) After the uninstallation is complete, reboot your computer as soon as possible.

After you have successfully uninstalled the driver go to manufacturer’s website. Download the latest touchpad driver and install it.

I hope this resolves your issue, please feel free to write to us if you have any other Windows related issues.

I have the similar problem. My touchpad cannot do zoom or 2-finger scrolling (multipoint) after the latest update of Window 10. I cannot find the touchpad hardware / device in the Device Manager, means cannot update the driver. The Mouse Properties Tab shows my touchpad driver version is "empty". I don't have any clue to fix that.

    Can someone help me?

Thank you for your reply! It didn't fix the problem but I appreciate the help. :)

And I forgot to mention that I had already tried clean boot before posting here.

I've been googling some more since I posted my question and I found out that a number of HP users have encountered this problem and it seems that the general consensus was that the problem was with the hardware.

I've contacted HP support and described my problem and they want me to send the laptop back in for repair... Hopefully once it's fixed it won't happen again.

    Thanks again for your help!
