Windows 8.1 does not recognise my Iomega external hard drive

I recently upgraded from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1. My Iomega 1Tb external hard drive was recognised by Windows 8 but not by Windows 8.1 although when I disconnect the cable from the USB port it knows it is there.

Microsoft - is this something you can help with or are you working on a patch?

Community - has anyone had a the same problem and found a work around?

Guys, the problem is not with the Windows itself. It is with the Windows Defender. You can solve this by add the PROCCESS C:\Program Files (x86)\Iomega\Iomega Encryption\Iomega Encryption.exe to the Windows Defender EXCLUSION. Enjoy!

    OS: Windows 10 Pro (10.0.10240)

Just had the same problem after upgrading to Windows 8.1.

I managed to solve the problem by going to the Device Manager, then search for the device corresponding to the HDD partition of the disk. For me it was named something like "OEM Ext Hard Disk...".

Then I just right-clicked on the device, and clicked on Uninstall.

After the device is uninstalled, I un-plugged and re-plugged the USB cable of the Iomega HDD.

Then the Iomega Encryption software was able to recognize the device. And by the way, the new device had another name in the Device Manager, something like "Disk OEM Ext Hard Disk" with an ID in brackets after the name.

    Hope it helps !

Thanks for your quick response. The external hard drive is the silver model - Number 31924200 and having gone through the three methods you suggested (including downloading and running Driver Manager) it is showing only one improvement - the drive shows up in File Explorer. However I still cannot access its contents.

Is this an Iomega problem now?
