Hi, 1st time I'm here...after solving all problems since W95, this has me stumped.  I'll yry & simply give the details.  The problem has been occurring for 10 months, very intermittantly.  I'm running 4 different PCs and they all have this issue, and I'll explain what's been done so far too.  The time interval between occurrences ranges 6 hours to some weeks!  All are win7 home x86, with all updates.  Other than what follows, NO OTHER problems whatsoever on all pcs.  The problem manifests in 2 variants as follows:

  1. While copying/Pasting files between folder, drives or even USB key drives I will get a popup window saying Windows Explorer has stopped working., and the box offers to provide details or continue.  After grabbing error data (or from EventViewer  or Reliability Monitor, clicking continue and everything goes fine, sometimes Win Explorer may restart.

The error data I have seen many times on your website and others:  The following is shown 99% as:

Source

Windows Explorer

  1. Othertimes, the PC can just be sitting, nothing running, may not even have Win Explorer open.  A similar Windows Explorer Stopped box may pop up, offer no options or buttons and after a few seconds Win Explorer will simply close &/or restart (even if it wasn't open!

Again, this may not happen again for hours to many days.  No recent changes (prior to this stuff) was made.  Did memory test, Norton Scan, Malware bytes scan and SFC /Scannow.  Basically all clean...except 3 or 4 recent enteries were found recently about unable to fix xxx, ran a fndstr "[SR]" parse and they turned out to be a well known set of MS files "telemetry monitoring" I think related to the W10 pushout.

Ran thru Shellx and removed all non MS context menu items (no help).  Read that there was a KB that related to having "Network Discovery turned on", I turned that off on all PC's=no help.  Did NOT apply the Hotfix kb/2494427 ...

since I has no evidence and didn't yet want to complicate the issue??  Tried CLEAN Boot, Safeboot, but the error is so intermittant, the fact that it did NOT help was meaningless.  Following another post on this forum, I have setup a user-crash dump via:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Error Reporting\LocalDumps\explorer.exe]"DumpFolder"=hex(2):43,00,3a,00,5c,00,43,00,72,00,61,00,73,00,68,00,44,00,75,\00,6d,00,70,00,73,00,00,00

So far (2 days...) and no errors, but it may at any moment.  When the fail occurs, I expect the log (dump) will be created & hopefully point to the REAL cause.  If & when the dmp is created, are you able to analyze it & advise?

I also read that a typical reason for this MIGHT be a D.E.P trigger event?  So that's my sad tale...any comments or suggestions would be very much appreciated.

Bob

Wanted to just touch base and advise status...the aformentioned error is still an ongoing issue on several pc's.  Problem is that it is far from consistent and there may be hours to days between events...this intermittant component to the problem, makes it nearly impossible to track down...it's just not feasible to run in clean or safe mode for days or weeks with a crippled pc !  At this point,I'm more inclined to keep my user -defined error trap enabled to create a failure induced error dump.  The problem would then be to be able to be able to analyze that dump to have a hint of what caused the stack error.

Seems thou that being able to interpret the dump seems not so easy!  So, is there any sw util to at least allow me to have a chance to do that?....or if i get a dump file are you open to having a look at it?

    thanks, bob

    Hello Bob,

Thank you posting your query on Microsoft Community.

I would appreciate your efforts in resolving the issue.

I would suggest you to check the issue in new user account.

To check the user account corruption, I would suggest you to check the issue in new user account.

    Create a user account

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/create-user-account#create-user-account=windows**-7**

If issue do not persists in  new user account , then there could be possibility that your account could have gone corrupt. In that case, I would suggest you to transfer the user profile data from the old user account (corrupt account) to the new user account (Administrator).

To transfer data from old user account to new user account follow the article given below and go to the section**:**To copy files to the new user profile

    Fix a corrupted user profile

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/fix-corrupted-user-profile#1TC=windows-7

Hope this information is helpful. Please do let us know if you need further assistance with Windows.
