Bluetooth devices won't work with iTunes

I recently bought a Lenovo Yoga 3 Laptop (Windows 8.1).  From the outset I’ve been having problems getting my Bluetooth devices (Phiaton headset and Bose speakers) to work with iTunes. Sound doesn’t get through at all, or I get a brief crackling noise. None of my other computers, PC or Mac, have this issue. What’s more, the Bluetooth devices work fine with YouTube or any audio app on my laptop other than iTunes.  Lenovo Tech Support hasn't been able to help. Today I had a 2-hour session with Apple Tech Support: the technicians explored all possible problems and fixes (including uninstall/reinstall) and came up empty. They suggested I contact Windows Support, which it turns out doesn't really exist anymore except for sales. Another, possibly related problem: When I try to close iTunes I get a message: “one or more devices are using iTunes scripting interface.” (None of the techies at Apple knew what that meant.)

Disregard my previous reply. After some research and troubleshooting, I've discovered a fix. Figured I'd share in case others are still experiencing this problem:

    1. In ITunes, choose Edit > Preferences > Playback. Under "Play Audio Using", change the drop-down from 'Windows Audio Session' to 'Direct Sound'.
    2. Close iTunes
    3. Disconnect Bluetooth device from PC
    4. Reboot PC.
    5. Reconnect Bluetooth device
    6. Open iTunes
    7. Play music!

Note: In order for this to work, you may also want to make sure that your Bluetooth speaker/headset is set as the default playback device through your PC's control panel.

    Hello Larry,

Thank you for posting your query on Microsoft Community.

As per the issue description your Bluetooth device don't work with iTunes only.

Let's try these methods below and check if that helps.

Method 1: Run Hardware and devices troubleshooter

The Hardware Troubleshooter is an automated tool which will check the hardware connected to the computer for any known issues with it and provides the details and on how to fix them. Follow these steps and run the troubleshooter.

    1. Press Windows key to launch the Start screen.
    2. Type “Troubleshooting” without quotes and click on Troubleshooting.
    3. In the new window, click View all on the left pane.
    4. In the list of options, click on Hardware and devices.
    5. Click Next and follow the on-screen instructions.

If issue persist, follow method 2

**Method 2:**Check for the Bluetooth service

I would you check if Bluetooth Support service is started.

    1. Press Windows key + R
    2. Type services.msc and press Ok
    3. Find Bluetooth Support Service
    4. Start it and set it as Automatic

If the issue persist, follow method 3

**Method 3:**Try to re-enable your Bluetooth device

It is also possible that the Airplane mode is On of your computer.

Airplane mode is a setting that gives you a quick way to turn off all wireless communication on your PC. As the name implies, it's especially useful when you're on an airplane. Wireless communication includes Wi-Fi, mobile broadband, Bluetooth, GPS or GNSS, near field communication (NFC), and all other types of wireless communication.

    Let’s check the settings.

    1. Open PC Settings
    2. Select Network, and then Airplane mode.

If your Bluetooth device was previously paired, there should be an Enable Bluetooth switch.  Switch it to On.

    Open iTunes

    1. Go to 'Edit' and select 'Preferences'
    2. Select 'Playback' tab
    3. Where it says "Play Audio Using" select 'Direct Sound' in the drop down menu
    4. Click 'Ok' and close iTunes

When you start iTunes again, music should now play via Bluetooth speaker

    Regards,

    Ramesh:

Thank you so much for your reply to my issue. I tried the three steps you suggested --  unfortunately, the problem persists. I strongly suspect  this is an Apple rather than a Bluetooth or Windows issue, or at least results from some incompatibility between Apple software and the settings/software/hardware on this PC.  And it's not just a problem with Bluetooth:  iTunes plays exclusively through the PC's speakers -- even ordinary earphones won't pick up the audio. All my other audio apps (Xbox Music, Windows Media Player, etc.)  have full functionality (speakers, earphones, and Bluetooth) and I've been using them to access iTunes files.

    Larry
