My HP isn't sending print jobs to my printer.

I can't determine why, all of a sudden, my HP laptop isn't sending print jobs to my wireless Brother printer.  When I open Devices and Printers, the "troubleshooting" icon resides with my device, not with the printer.  When I open the troubleshooting window, it doesn't tell me what's wrong.  I'm not technical, but so far, I've rebooted both PC, printer, and wireless router, and still can't get anything to print.

    KCStarPilot,

Sometimes resolving printing problems can take quite a bit of work. We need to start with a few basic questions. It sounds like the printer is listed in Devices and Printers. From within Devices and Printers, if you right click on the printer and select "see what's printing", do any waiting documents show up in the print cue? If no documents in the cue, then the problem is probably either the computer or network. Just to make sure some things are working, go to the Search box and type in "network" (without quotes) and hit enter. Your network devices should show up. Is the printer listed there? If it is listed there, then it is starting to look like the item to be printed was not sent from the computer and may match the presence of the "troubleshooting" icon on your device.

By the way, the "troubleshooter" is not always the most helpful. What program were you trying to print from? If printing from a document editor, does a "Print" box show up asking where you want the document printed? Did you receive software with your printer? Is it installed? Any recent software updates for the printer. Any other information or observations you can think of might be helpful.

    Regards

Glad to learn that things are back up and running. A good learning experience.

I am not sure which is worse, printer problems or network problems. Both can be tough.

    Regards

    Hi UsedFord,

I actually used all of your suggestions earlier today (found a self-tutorial on my printer's website).  It suggested the same problems you stated had occurred.  In addition, I changed out the toner a few days ago, and the belief is that some quirky disconnect might have happened during that process.  Needless to say, I did delete one of the printer, and performed an installation software update, and it seems to be printing now without any problems.

Thanks for your help, I really appreciate the advice.

    Best regards.

The presence of a second printer that is basically the same indicates that sometime in the recent past, the computer has become confused and loaded another copy of the same printer - "Copy 1".

This problem is starting to sound like a printer driver problem. Device identification and listing does not necessarily mean device communication. As a next step, I think I would delete both printers listed of the same name (Copy 0 & 1) and reinstall the printer and the software (I assume some installation software came with the printer). Completely uninstall the Brother software as well as the printer. Like starting over from scratch.

By the way, was there a recent printer driver update either from Microsoft or from Brother before the problems started? You might also look at any software updates from Microsoft that you could correlate with the beginning of the printer problems. It does not take much to mess up printer communication. Happens more often than you think.

    Regards.

    UsedFord,

Yes, when I look to see what is printing, nothing is printing nor is anything listed in the cue.   I also went to Network and see my laptop, printer, and router all listed.  Something new I'm seeing and don't recall it being there before, but when I go to devices and printers, I see two printers, both identical, except the second one also has "(Copy 1)" (not in quotes) and shows as the default printer.  I don't know why I would have that second one.  I've tried making the first printer the default, but nothing changes in terms of print jobs.  Do I need to delete the Copy 1 printer?
