    Hi Sheryl,

Welcome to the Windows 7 Community!

I understand that you would like to know the difference between MHT file and HTM file. I am glad to help you.

MHTML, short for MIME HTML, is a web page archive format used to combine resources that are typically represented by external links (such as images, Flash animations, Java applets, audio files) together with HTML code into a single file. The content of an MHTML file is encoded as if it were an HTML e-mail message, using the MIME type multipart/related. The first part of the file is normally encoded HTML; subsequent parts are additional resources identified by their original URLs and encoded in base64. This format is sometimes referred to as MHT, after the suffix .mht given to such files by default when created by Microsoft Word, Internet Explorer, or Opera. MHTML is a proposed standard, circulated in a revised edition in 1999 as RFC 2557.

HTML Web page used by Web browsers; contains markup code that is stored a plain text format; used to display and format text and images in a Web browser.

HTM files serve the exact same purpose as .HTML files. The ".htm" extension arose with the use of Microsoft Web development software, such as FrontPage, SharePoint Designer, and Expression Web.

HTM files are much less commonly seen than HTML files.

Hope it helps. For any further Windows related assistance, feel free to contact us and we will be happy to help.

    Regards!

MHT is the file extension for an MHTML file.

HTM and HTML are the file extensions for an HTML file.

The way I read the explanation is this:

The MHTML file (ie with the "mht" file extension) contains the html code for the web page but also bundles together the page's other resources into one file instead of leaving them separated out. As the answer said, "MHTML ... is a web page archive format used to combine resources that are typically represented by external links (such as images, Flash animations, Java applets, audio files) together with HTML code into a single file."

Saving a web page as htm or html leaves several components (suggested above) outside of the htm/html file. Saving the page as mht causes those components to be imbedded into the single mht file.

For example, if you use Microsoft Word to create a simple page containing images and then save it in htm or html format, what you will get is the htm/html file plus a folder containing the images and other content. More complex pages will result in other such resources sitting outside of the htm/html file too.

If you save the same Word document in mht format, everything is imbedded in the one mht file.

While I appreciate your effort, this answer could not be more confusing. "MHTML" – is this an HTML file or an MHT file? Because that is the essence of the question. It sounds like it's an HTML file. Okay let's go with that. However in your 3rd paragraph you seem to say that an HTML is the same thing as an HTM file. Then you say they're the same. Then you say that MHT files are much less commonly seen than HTML files. At no point do you discuss any differences between the 2 file formats such as uses, preferred format for saving as an archive, etc.

You should deftly start out with an MHT file is [answer], and an HTML file is [answer]. No one asked what and MHTML file is in less you work it in by saying it is the exact same thing as an HTML file.

Anyway, you can see the average reader would be very confused even though I am sure that you know the correct answer to this question.
