The Movies (Lionhead Studios) not running in Windows 10

Having recently installed Windows 10, I am mostly liking what it has to offer. Unfortunately, I am experiencing compatability issues with a piece of software that I use quite frequently. It is the 2005 PC game 'The Movies' (along with it's 'Stunts and Effects' expansion pack).

This game ran perfectly fine with Windows 8.1 and Windows 7, I managed to run the game on these platforms with no issues. With Win 10 however, it seems as though the game just won't launch. I try running as Administrator, I try using compatibility mode (which has NEVER ever worked for me) but the game just simply doesn't start up whatsoever. I've launched a few PC games that are even older with no problems.

The Movies still has a fairly active community in which I have a few movie projects I'm still working on with the software. If I can't get it to run on Win 10, I'll have to downgrade or just abandon work on the projects, both of which I don't want to do at this point. Hoping someone can help me out here, cheers.

Yes, this is one of the many games that Monopoly$oft has broken with it's DRM blocking 'feature'.

(imo - An extortion attempt aimed at getting people to buy a download version which has had the

    DRM removed.)

Win7 users are not immune to the Monopoly$oft

malware which is installed  via the 'Security Update' - KB3086255 -  but they do have options for

disabling the DRM Blocking malware. I have more details in my post at  --this thread--

The only fix for Win10 is a noCD patch. The noCD for The Movies can be found  --here--

    • The only expansion pack fix is for the 'Stunts and Effects' expansion.

(Deviance fixes generally work well. He is one of the more prolific noCD creators )

I tried installing the game in compatibility mode. No difference, the game just doesn't run at all. All my drivers are fully updated as well.

    Hi,

I made the game working fine. I've got a 100% original french version.

First, know the setup stucks if there is no compatibility option.

So, I ran the setup from the disc (no autorun) as admin with a Windows Vista compatibility (maybe others compatibilities are OK but I didn't test them). Install was a success.

I tried to launch the game as admin with all compatibility options. It never worked.

I installed the official french patch 1.1, but I'm almost sure it changed nothing.

I replaced the original .exe by the NoDisc .exe #1 that can be found here for German/English version.

I know this kind of thing is used for pirate versions, but I didn't find any other solution and it worked fine with my french game. Game launch was a success.

Still, I discovered bad textures bug on the characters waiting at the school of art (pure black textures, except their eyes) but not on characters waiting at the maintenance.

Then I re-launched the game as admin with Window 98/Me compatibility this time.

All is good ; textures cleared.

I am not sure by where and why it is now working, but it is here all that I've done.

Good luck to all of you.
