SD card reader not working on Win 7 after return from Windows 10

I tried the update to Windows 10. The computer kept on freezing and I couldn't get the screen back after it was turned off under the power management system. I also had WiFi card problems where the card stopped responding to commands and Windows tried to do something about it, causing the frequent freezes. So I returned to Windows 7 Home Premium.

I have just noticed the computer does not see the SD card reader.

I can't see anything in Device Manager that says SD card reader. Under Disk Drives there is a "Generic STORAGE DEVICE USB Device" with a yellow shield and exclamation mark against it. Is that it? Windows cannot load the driver for this device (Code 39). It may be the USB external drive, which is not plugged in.

Under Other Devices there is an "Unknown device" with a question mark in a circle against it. There is no driver available and it is working properly! Its service is "cfwids01".

I don't know which way to go next.

I have uninstalled the driver several times and Windows always reloads the Windows drivers disk.sys and partmgr.sys but the SD card does not work. Both are Microsoft files.

When I posted my previous post, it was just a "disk drive". Now it is a "Generic STORAGE DEVICE USB Device", still under Disk Drives in Device Manager.

I see there are three copies of the two driver files on the computer. How can I replace the one in use with one of the others to see if any work? Administrator permission is not enough.

Situation unchanged. SD card is in Disk Drives:

There appear to be no problems with the USB devices:

The driver files (2) for the "Generic STORAGE DEVICE USB Device" are Windows files as stated above. The driver for the USB Mass Storage Device is also a Windows file, USBSTOR.SYS. All are dated 2006, 3 years before the computer was made!

Windows says they are up to date.

I can find nothing at Dell that looks like an SD card driver.

How can I update the Windows Drivers?

Most likely a USB driver but if you tell us your computer model I can check Dell for you.

You may want to (in device manager)  go to view>show hidden devices and check the USB devices for the "!" exclamation mark (if any).  It should say something like USB Mass storage (see snip) Or it may be under disk drives (see snip 2)  The snips are from win 10 so they may vary slightly on your system

    Thanks for your reply.

Yes, but what is the current driver? There is no device in Device Manager that says it is an SD card reader. There are two odd ones as I said, which is the SD card? The one under Disk Drives? That one has a Microsoft driver dated 2006, v. 6.1.7600.16385. The files are disk.sys and partmgr.sys. These are the same files and as for the SCSI device also listed in that section. If I uninstall the odd one, will it also uninstall the SCSI device?

Trouble Shooter failed to find a driver for it. I have Windows Update set to Automatic.

I don't know where to look. I looked at Dell's web site drivers downloads using my service tag but there is nothing there that says it is for SD card.

More often than not when a device isn't working it is because the driver has become corrupted. Re-installing a fresh copy should help

Completely remove the current driver and install the newest driver available.  For instructions on how to do that Read all about updating drivers by my partner JMH3143 here http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki/windows_other-hardware/updating-a-driver/a5e6345e-af9b-4099-bef0-8d22254aa1c1?tm=1436753520149
