My motivations for asking are as follows:

  1. If it's a virus or malware I want to delete it.
  2. If it is unnecessary I want to free up space on my harddrive.
  3. I have a keen interest in computer science so knowing what this does would help me learn.

    1. If it's a virus or malware I want to delete it.

    -> .ini files cannot be viruses.

    2. If it is unnecessary I want to free up space on my harddrive.

    -> Do some basic calculations!

    • The file is probably less than 10 kBytes in size.
    • Your disk is likely to be 500 GBytes in size or larger.
    • You can fit 50 million of your .ini file onto your hard disk.

    Question: What would gain by clearing such a tiny proportion of your disk? Next to nothing!

    3. I have a keen interest in computer science so knowing what this does would help me learn.

    -> Use notepad.exe to look inside the file. It will probably tell you what it is.
