I recently upgraded to windows 10 from 7, 64 bit and thus far I have been enjoying windows 10. lots of good content so far!
ONE MAJOR PROBLEM
I am first and foremost a gamer, and I use steam for a lot of games. steam itself seems kind of unstable on 10, but overall, not a problem. I bought fallout 3 and enjoyed playing it on 7. but on 10 it will not launch. I can start the launcher (sometimes) and hit play, but the moment I hit it, it crashes. I would LOVE to be able to play this still. I've looked at TONS of fixes, and none have worked. either finding me a fix, or making windows 10 more compatible to previous software would be great. thanks for help!

I am using Windows 10 pro 64 bit and Steam, I was able to get Fallout 3 to work by doing the following.
navigate to the following folder:
For 64 bit: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Fallout 3 goty\Fallout3.exe"
For 32 bit: "C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\Fallout 3 goty\Fallout3.exe"
right click and go to properties, compatibility tab and set it to run in compatibility mode for Windows Xp.
You might have to try different versions, some things will run using SP 2 but not SP 1 or 3.
This fix should work for Windows 8 and 8.1 as well.
I don't know if the Steam version would have fixed the main issues that the retail disk version of the game has, but -
2) Shouldn't be necessary with the Steam version, but retail disk users need to patch the game.
I have only gone as far as 1.5, but they go to 1.7. Be sure to use the correct language version (there is a UK and US English version). Patch 1.6 & 1.7 mostly address issues with Mothership Zeta & Point Lookout expansion packs,
so they may be necessary with the GOTY edition.
When I first upgraded to Win10 my FO3 .ini file was somehow reverted to default, which broke the fix below
and caused the game to lock-up when I first tested it on Win10 -
Open up the fallout.ini file in My Documents\My Games\Fallout3 (make a copy first for backup)
Find the line:
bUseThreadedAI=0
(Open the ini file with notepad - Click Edit - then find - copy this line and paste it into the find what box)
change it to:
bUseThreadedAI=1
Add another line (tap Enter on keyboard) after it and insert: (copy and paste the next line)
iNumHWThreads=2
This will limit the game to 2 cores and prevent the engine bug from causing the game to freeze.
------- For machines that still crash --------
Instead of iNumHWThreads=2, change it to iNumHWThreads=1
--------------------
( I have not looked for a Win10 codec pack, so if one has been released it may be better to use that version)

(the download page referrs to DX9.0c and previous, but it will install any 'missing' DX10 and 11 files as well -
Download DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer from Official Microsoft Download Center
a) In the event of a corrupt DX file you need to reinstall DirectX using the runtime installer (June 2010) -

I am currently having issues running Fallout 3 GOTY edition on steam on windows 10 however, mine doesn't crash on the launch menu, it crashes randomly in game, and it has become more persistent the last week or two. I have tried compatibility mode and cannot seem to find this .DLL file that people are deleting to make it work. If you have an idea I am up to try it!
I love Windows 10, and I am really loving Fallout 3, so I really hope we can get the two to play nicely together. Thank you for any help you can offer.
What DLL file did you delete? I couldn't find one named "D3D9".
