Issues playing audio after installing new hard drive

Original Title: Unreliable audio on Sindows

I am running Windows 7 and Office 2010 on a compaq laptop. I recently had to have a new hard drive installed, and since then the audio has been mostly missing. It does come back occasionally (once in two or three blue moons) but disappears as soon as I turn the laptop off. the fact that the sound is there some of the time tells me that the individual parts are all present and connected, but something is not working.

How do I find out what and put it right, plese?

I've had an email asking me to report on progress. My audio came back unexpectedly yesterday ( 23rd November 2015). I have not shut my computer down since, only put it to sleep so I could move it because experience has taught me that it is shutting the computer down that causes the loss of the audio.

I did the necessary restart to finish installing the program from Hewlett Packard and it failed to install, threw up an error message. I'm getting frustrated as I need reliable audio on this computer. the older one does not see discs at all, and does not have safe internet access as it won't let me install anti-virus software.

I currently have audio, at least til I close down. I got a program from Hewlett Packard that looks as though it should help but it needs a restart to finish installing it which leaves me with a quandary.

My  laptop is a Presario CQ58 from Compaq.

I have run the audio troubleshooter with no luck, and also read your article, which did not help. I am in the process of seeing what Hewlett Packard can do for me as that company seems to have responsibility for Compaq computers.

I'll let you know what happens as it may help someone else.

Ps:- why do the replies to this query come into ******@yahoo.co.uk instead of ******@gmail.com. the yahoo address is outdated and should no longer be on your system. (I have now sorted this. I discovered that although I have updated the address on my sign -in, it was still the old address in my profile.
