Dell 2330d Printer

I had no problem with Windows 7 Home Premium, then I had the bright idea of upgrading to Windows 7 Professional.

Although my Dell 2330d shows up in Devices & Printers, it will not print.  Error message tells me no driver is needed or found for this device.

Already tried the Dell site and downloaded / installed the correct driver - still not able to print.

Any other ideas on how to download just the printer driver, save to disk and then point Windows 7 to exactly where the driver is?

Seems like Windows 7 is "blind" and cannot find the driver on the local disk or online.

Thanks

My earlier instructions may have omitted too many details.

    A. "Dell 2330d/2330dn Mono Laser Printer"  (R242568.exe) is NOT a driver.  It's a network configuration utility.  Executing this file will not help you install the printer.

    B.  The 140 MB file you downloaded IS the disk you are looking for when you click the "Have Disk" button.  But you have to do a little extra work -- and some guesswork -- if simply running that file didn't work (it should have worked -- that is, after you executed that file, you should have seen your Dell printer listed in the Add a printer wizard list of printers)).

    1. Download (free) 7-zip --> http://7-zip.org/ 7-zip is a very useful file compression/decompression utility, but you can uninstall it after you're done if you want to do so.
    2. Right-click on the file you downloaded (Dell_2330_2350_ACH_Admin.exe) and select 7-zip > Extract files.  This will create a folder with the same name as the downloaded file (without the exe, of course).

    C. During the uninstall process, make sure you get to the following screen either by clicking the "Print server properties" button or by using the printui /s /t2 command.  Details are here --> http://www.dell.com/support/article/us/en/19/SLN285062/en

When you are at the above screen, select the driver for your Dell 2330d (if present) and click "Remove."  Remove BOTH the driver and the driver package.

    D. Follow the installation instructions here --> http://www.dell.com/support/article/us/en/19/SLN286269/en

Once again, you will see the screen above.  This time, click the "Add" button.  This starts the "Add Printer Driver Wizard."  This is similar to, but not the same as, the sequence of screens you get by clicking "Add a printer."

You will get to a screen very similar to the one you see in the "Add a printer" dialog.

Once again, you will not find your Dell printer listed, so click the Have Disk button.

    1. Browse to the Dell_2330_2350_ACH_Admin folder that you created earlier
    2. There are many sub-folders.  Double-click to open the "drivers" folder, then double-click to open the "print" folder, and finally, double-click to open the Win_2kXP folder.  Yes, the folder name suggests it's only for Win 2000 and XP, but from having looked inside the *.inf files (see below), I'm confident that these files will work for Windows 7.
    3. You will see the following screen.  This is where the guess work comes in:

You need to select one of the three INF files at the end of the list.  I don't know what the difference is between these.  If it were me, I would select DKACHL40.inf, but that's not based on any firm knowledge.  Pick one, click the "Open" button, and complete the Wizard.

Once the driver has installed, connect the printer.  This time, after Windows recognizes it, it should install correctly.

I am back !!  And, frustrated as ever !!

Windows 7 Home Premium had no problem recognizing my printer and loading the driver.  I was printing within minutes.  Now going on 2 weeks without a printer!!

Now, the issue continues with MS Windows 7 Professional (acting very unprofessionally).

I have tried all of the suggestions above numerous times and downloaded and installed (& uninstalled) the driver package (Dell_2330_2350_ACH_Admin.exe) from Dell several times.  I have also tried just the driver itself (Dell Drivers 2330D-2330DN (R242568).exe) from Dell.

    Nothing seems to work.

After uninstalling and unplugging the power cord and USB cord, I plug everything back in.  Windows 7 recognizes the Dell 2330d printer and properly identifies it in "Devices & Printers".  Windows then tries to find and install a driver.

After somewhat a pause, I am notified that Windows failed to install a driver for the device; Windows update (online) cannot seem to find one either.

Backing out yet again and unplugging and then "Removing Device" through "Devices & Printers", I try to install manually through "Add a Printer".

Here is where the problem seems to manifest itself !!  In the list of printers, Dell is not listed !!  So the next option I would have (if I still had the original installation disk) is to select "Have a Disk".

Does anyone know how I can get burn an installation disk?  When I search, all I can find is the 140MB download I already have multiple copies of from the Dell Support site which is an *.exe file.

Or, does anyone know how I can get Windows 7 to offer Dell printers as an option in the "Add a Printer"?

    Thank you.

It's hard to tell from your narrative what state your system is at this point.

It's also not clear if you intend to connect this printer via USB or network.  My guess is USB because you mention "unplugging" it.

Have you tried following ALL of the steps here --> http://www.dell.com/support/article/us/en/19/SLN286269/en

Do not skip any of the parts in Step 1, including those on the linked page.  When you get to the last step on the "How to uninstall" page (click "Remove" on the "Drivers" tab of the "Print Server Properties" window), you will be given a choice to remove only the driver or the driver and the package.  Choose the latter.

The file you want from Dell is Dell_2330_2350_ACH_Admin.exe (Drivers for O/S Deployment).  The other file is a network utility.

    Hello Mayank,

Thank you for taking the time to respond and help.

I have attempted all of the "suggestions" in the MS support tech articles.

    1. Uninstalled the device numerous times.
    2. Restarted Windows and powered up printer, Windows recognizes and attempts to install driver(s), every time I get an error message driver installation failed
    3. Tried downloading driver from Dell several times [this one:  Dell 2330d/2330dn Mono Laser PrinterR242568.exeApplication(10 MB)] and, this one: [Dell 2330d/2330dn Mono Laser Printer Dell_2330_2350_ACH_Admin.exe | ALL (140 MB) Drivers for OS Deployment]
    4. Still nada
    5. Went to "Devices and Printers", Windows correctly identifies the printer as a Dell 2330d/dn Laser Printer; but, has a "trouble" icon (yellow yield sign)
    6. Open troubleshooter, and try to get Windows to find the correct driver online - Nutthin'
    7. Tried : Add a Printer in Devices and Printers (after unplugging printer since I don't have the option of "Remove Device" - Windows does not list Dell as a option under this set of menus after I get past the "Local Printer"
    8. Tried right clicking the Dell Printer in "Devices & Printers" and I get "Troubleshoot" and "Properties" in the menu
    9. Been down the "Troubleshoot" path countless times - nada, I go to "Properties"
    10. Click on "Hardware" tab, click on "Properties" button and get to yet another sub-menu : 3 tabs at the top : General, Driver & Details as well as a "Change Settings" button.
    11. Windows tries to convince me "This Device is working properly" - NO IT IS NOT !!!
    12. Under the "Driver" tab, sometimes I get the option of "Update Driver" and "Uninstall", usually not, though
    13. I see in the info above that no driver is installed.
    14. All this even after manually downloading and installing driver package from Dell.

I am at my wit's end on how to get this printer to work again - with Windows 7 Home Premium it was plug in and print.  Since I "upgraded to Windows 7 Professional, it has been a nightmare to get the printer to work.

The printer is recognized each time I unplug it, "Remove Device", plug back in again, but, Windows fails / refuses to load the driver, and, does not offer Dell as an option to manually install & configure the printer

Oh, I also tried to re-install windows hoping it would load the correct driver for the printer - again - NADA

At least the System Restore worked (as I did a fresh install of Windows7) so I did not need to restore settings manually.

Isn't there a simple, single driver file (like in the old days) where I can go, download a relatively small driver file, save to disk, go to "Update Driver" in Windows and point Windows to the folder I saved the file???????

    HELP !?!?!?!?!?
