I found the solution to my own problem. When I checked the Startech.com website's FAQs (for my product #USB2VGAE3), I found a solution for “I’m having problems with my web browser, Microsoft Office, or other Windows applications; what do I do?” at this link.

Microsoft Office 2010 and Microsoft Office 2013

    1. Open any program in Microsoft Office (for example, Microsoft Word).
    2. Click the Filetab.
    3. In the menu on the left side of the screen, click Options.
    4. Click Advanced.
    5. Under Display, select the Disable hardware graphics accelerationcheck box.
    6. Close and restart all of the Microsoft Office programs that you had open.

Excel, Word and PowerPoint were not working but thankfully my Outlook 2013 was still functioning. So I changed the display setting there and closed it. After that my Office programs are working again.

    Woohoo!!

This is an update to a program from     MAGIC CONTROL TECHNOLOGY CORP

Did you install some 3rd party software? or click on a pop up saying your system needs to be upgraded?

I received this update message just the other day and since you really have no choice but to restart, I did.  However, afterwards, my Windows Calculator and my Snipping Tool would not work (Calculator acted like it was going to open but wouldn't and Snipping Tool wouldn't open any JPG files.).  I went to add/remove programs and uninstalled this Trigger Graphics program (it was in programs, not windows updates which seems suspicious in itself) and now my Calculator and Snipping tool are working again.

If you get the update message, go ahead and reboot and then immediately go and uninstall it.

    Hi Joe,

Thank you for helping me out! It is really appreciated!

Nope, I can't think i have, and I don't click on weird looking pop-ups either.

I eventually had to turn my pc off for the night so it did update itself and I have turned the pc on afterwards and nothing strange has happened. What do you think? I have such limited comprehension of these types of things?

    Muchly thanks

    Kathryn

Is Trigger External Graphics Family a necessary part of the Windows Update? I am being asked to accept this as part of my Windows update.  What does it do and how will it affect the performance of my tablet computer. I have Window 10 on a Microsoft Surface 3. Help, should I accept it or not?
