Movie Maker 2.6 with Windows 10 Upgrade

Since upgrading to Windows 10, when I add titles to a project timeline, the titles are not visible when played or previewed.  This is true for a new project I am working on as well as completed projects that I launch in WMM 2.6.  Any help would be appreciated.

If you are still interested in using a "classic" version of Movie Maker, I would suggest using Windows Movie Maker 6.0 instead of the older CPU-only WMM 2.6. It has the same traditional timeline as 2.6 so you should have no problems using it but it is designed to use your GPU and takes advantage of 64-bit CPUs. It can load your WMM 2.6 projects also.

Install Windows Movie Maker 6.0 on Windows 7/8/10

I forgot to thank YOU for posting the link to Blaine's site.  Thank you so very much.

The differences between the two versions of the program are simply visual for the most part.  There are some quick access actions available in the older version (Open Project, a stop button on the player to name a couple) not available (but accessible) on the newer version that I liked.

I was having difficulty with "sizing" the view window of the editor in the beginning that made it smaller than what I was used to in the older version.  I believe using the "compatibility" option in the Properties box for the shortcut corrected that.

As I stated 6.0 is far superior to 2.6 and it might just be hating change.  I did edit one video last night in 6.0 and I was a bit slower completing it due to the minor changes.  That might change the more I use it, one would expect.

My plan was to edit my videos using 2.6 and then save the Project using 6.0 since there are HD choices in the updated version.  Sounds rather stupid, but I think I just need to use 6.0 a bit more.  I was just curious if anyone knew what I could do to get it to work in Win10Pro.

I have no idea what GPU provides for me and I had absolutely no complaints about the view window in 2.6.  I used to be quite knowledgeable regarding PCs (my first used DOS back in the day), but haven't enriched my education as things got more professional.

Hey, thank you for your reply and again for posting the link to the download.

The GPU stands for "Graphics Processing Unit". While primarily used for accelerating the drawing of graphics for video games, it can also speed up video processing tasks. So it should help the final rendering time when you save your final movie.

As for why WMM 2.6 isn't working in Windows 10 Professional, I don't know. I would think it should work in any of the Windows 10 versions.

    Just to clarify:

    • Windows Movie Maker 6.0 was created on Windows Vista with 64-bit CPU support and GPU rendering. It was a whole new rendering engine using the GPU and pixel/vertex shaders to provide a better preview (rather than the 15 fps preview from XP).
    • Windows Movie Maker 2.6 was also created on Windows Vista but was basically a port of the CPU-only version from Windows XP. It doesn't have GPU rendering support. I believe it was also limited to a 32-bit version without the 64-bit CPU support of 6.0.

So my question would be what is it that you need from WMM 2.6 that isn't supplied in WMM 6.0? My only guess would be that there are some transitions/effects that are slightly different in WMM 6.0. Or that you are using custom transitions/effects/titles that work with the XP version and hence WMM 2.6 too.

You might find that the best approach is to install WMM 6.0 and then use the library of user-created transitions/effects/titles that work with WMM 6.0. You'll find that most of the things you could do in the XP version have been ported to work in WMM 6.0.

Well, thank God for Blaine for not only having the Version 6, but for making it effortless for one to install on their machine.  I wasn't even aware there was a version after 2.6.  Although I do prefer the 2.6, this version is far superior to it in just about most ways.

Has anyone been able to get 2.6 to work on Windows 10 PROFESSIONAL?  As my "must have" video editor, I made it sure it would run on the first machine I upgraded to 10 on, but that has Windows 10 HOME installed on it.  But I've noticed the machine I actually use will not allow it to function properly.

The video to be edited in the preview window only "crowds" the upper left portion of the display area and it isn't even the complete video picture.

Just curious if anyone has been able to run it on PROFESSIONAL.

    Thanks again, Blaine.
