SigmaTel USB IR driver and Windows 8

I have used a SigmaTel USB IR stick for a year under Windows 8. After that it seems Windows removed it and now whatever I try - either via MS or manually selecting it off my hard disk - I cannot reinstall the driver.

from setupapi.dev.log

"[Boot Session: 2015/10/30 13:33:35.495]

>>>  [Device and Driver Disk Cleanup Handler]

>>>  Section start 2015/10/30 14:30:22.168

      cmd: taskhost.exe

set: Searching for not-recently detected devices that may be removed from the system.

set: Devices will be removed during this pass.

set: Device USB\VID_066F&PID_4210\0002F1080DDE09AC will be removed.

     set: Device USB\VID_066F&PID_4210\0002F1080DDE09AC was removed.

 (etc)"

Driver event tab records:

"Device USB\VID_066F&PID_4210\0002F1080DDE09AC was deleted."

then multiple instances of

"[date] device installed (stus2x64.inf)

Driver Management concluded the process to install driver stus2x64.inf_amd64_ca896a7a5ddcf390\stus2x64.inf for Device Instance ID USB\VID_066F&PID_4210\0002F1080DDE09AC with the following status: 0x2."

Attempting to reinstall the driver gives the following

"windows found driver software for your device but encountered an error while attempting to install it

USB 2.0 IrDA Bridge

The system cannot find the file specified"

I've run ProcMon to look at relevant error messages but not sure which are the important ones. The driver sys file stusb2ir.sys v1.00.1751 is in the drivers directory but not in the DriverStore folder. This triggers the following but not sure if that was the killer error?

"15:40:36.6240494","DrvInst.exe","1940","QueryDirectory","C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\stus2x64.inf_amd64_ca896a7a5ddcf390\stusb2ir.sys","NO SUCH FILE","Filter: stusb2ir.sys"

Thanks, just on the spur of the moment before trying those ideas I tried something so simple based on my original post and the error report at the end. I simply took the driver stusb2ir.sys file from system32\drivers and copied it into

"C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\stus2x64.inf_amd64_ca896a7a5ddcf390

reran the driver update and it flipping worked!

Presumably then MS? removed it or updated that repository folder without it.

I guess thanks to sysinternals for writing ProcMon.exe (since the Windows message didn't say what file was missing from where) plus Mayank for his suggestions too :-)

    Hi Kennedy,

Thank you for posting your query on Microsoft Community.

As per the description, I understand that you are unable to install drivers.

    Try the Methods.

    Method 1:

    Step 1:

Let’s start the computer by booting into “Disable driver signature enforcement” mode and then check if you can install the drivers. Sometimes driver signature enforcement blocks the installation of drivers.

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-IN/windows-8/windows-startup-settings-including-safe-mode

    Step 2:

I suggest you to perform clean boot and check, using this Microsoft Article because may be a third party application is causing this issue.

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/929135

    NOTE:

A clean boot is performed to start Windows by using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. This helps eliminate software conflicts that occur when you install a program or an update or when you run a program in Windows. You may also troubleshoot or determine what conflict is causing the problem by performing a clean boot. You must log on to the computer as an administrator to be able to perform a clean boot. Your computer may temporarily lose some functionality when you perform a clean boot. When you start the computer normally, the functionality returns. However, you may receive the original error message, or experience the original behavior if the problem still exists. If the computer is connected to a network, network policy settings may prevent you from following these steps.

    https://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135

Once you perform clean boot do refer to the section “How to reset the computer to start normally after clean boot troubleshooting” to boot the computer in normal mode.

    Method 2:

I would suggest you to perform a SFC Scan and check if it helps.

Refer to the following link given below.

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/929833

Note: While performing SFC Scan I would recommend you to make sure that there are no applications or programs running on the back ground.

Hope this information helps. Please let us know if you need any other assistance with Windows in future. We will be happy to assist you.
