Bluetooth headset connects but microphone won't work

I have recently bought a Blue Parrott Xpressway II Bluetooth headset to use with my Windows 7 machine and a Rocketfish RF-MRBTAD Bluetooth adapter. Initial installation went well, and it worked for several hours. Then it disconnected and had trouble connecting up again. Once it did connect up again, the headphone would function for playback, but not for recording.

At present, I have:

  • Updated the Bluetooth driver to the most recent version.
  • Selected the Headset Microphone as the default device for recording in the Sound section of the Control Panel.
  • Selected the Headset Microphone as the default device for playback in the Sound section of the Control Panel.
  • Disconnected the headset and reconnected it.
  • Disconnected the Bluetooth adapter and reconnected it.
  • Restarted the computer after each of these steps.

So far nothing seems to work. The Headset Microphone is listed as the Default Device for recording in the Sound section of the Control Panel. (It has the green check mark next to it.) However, the headset is clearly not picking up sound. No matter how loud I speak into the microphone, not a single green bar appears next to the listing for Headset Microphone.

In contrast, the Microphone Array (which is simply listed as Ready, with no green check mark) is picking up sound. I can see the green bars appear next to its listing when I make noise. That microphone is working, despite not being selected.

Can anyone offer any advice as to what I might do to get this microphone working? Ultimately I want to use it with Dragon Naturally Speaking. But for now I'd settle for simply getting the microphone to pass any information.

Hi Brian,

What is the make and model of the computer?

Method 1:

I would suggest you to run the troubleshooter and check if it helps.

a) OpentheRecording Audio troubleshooterby clicking the **Start button,**and then clicking Control Panel.

b) In the search box, type troubleshooter, and then click Troubleshooting.

c) Under Hardware and Sound, click Troubleshoot audio recording.

Method 2:

If the persists, you may try connecting the headset to another computer as suggested by Basith M on September 12, 2013. Check if the issue occurs on other computer or not.

Refer to the link for additional information.

I have the same issue.  Sound works, but the Mic doesn't.

    • I have a Lenovo Yoga 700 with Windows 10.
    • My bluetooth headset is an LG HBS-900.
    • I go to Control Panel > Sound and I can see the device in both the Playback and Recording tabs.
    • On the Playback tab I see the HBS-900 listed twice.
      • LG HBS900 Hands-Free (DISCONNECTED)
      • LG HBS900 Stereo (CONNECTED)
    • On the Recording tab I only see one entry for the device:
      • LG HBS900 Hands-Free (DISCONNECTED)
    • When I rigth click on the device I see a Connect option, but it does nothing.

    Any ideas?

    Dear Everyone,

Here is how I fixed my Connected but disconnected problem.

First here is a description of my problem.

I connected  my LG760 headset and got the output audio to work but the mic. Welp no go..

So spending a couple hours and much deliberation... What I ended up doing is..

Printer and Devices>Right click the bluetooth device>Properties>serives> Uncheck everything>Apply

    Recheck Everything> Apply.

Worked for me hope it helps!!!!

Below are pictures with a more kinda visual step by step. The last two are just to show my defaults

This problem is also on Windows 10. It's a shame how such a simple function still isnt resolved by microsoft.
