Hi!

I have a game called "Gahan Wilson's The Ultimate Haunted House", made in 1993/94. I used to play it as a kid on a Windows 95 machine.

I really want to play it again now. I have two laptops - one running Vista and the other, Windows 8. How can I play this game on either of them? Any suggestions are very much appreciated!

Thanks,

Geetu

    Microsoft,

We purchased your operating systems.....purchased games to run on them.....and then you upgrade the code. We understand the need to progress, but do not leave your patrons holding the bag. You have some of the most experienced programmers at your employment. It is not always about the ultimate buck. Have your programmers write (and pretest) an in system win 95, 98, xp, vista, etc. backwards compatible operating system. You would then have all of our admiration.

    Hi Geetu,

Welcome to the Microsoft Community. As per the problem description you want to play the game “Gahan Wilson's The Ultimate Haunted House” on Windows 8 or Vista.

You can check the compatibility of the game in compatibility center.

I would suggest you try running the game in compatibility mode and check. Follow these steps:

    a)    Press the ‘Windows + W’ key on the keyboard.

    b)    Type compatibility in the search box and then press enter.

    c)    Click “Run programs made for previous versions of Windows” option from the list appeared in the left side.

    d)    Select the game and run.

For Windows Vista you can refer this article for more information:

Make older programs run in this version of Windows

Hope this helps. Let us know if you need further assistance.

The "Compatibility Troubleshooter" is a joke - especially for 64-bit architecture. I've lost count of how many reports recommended "XP Service Pack 3" for 16-bit programs written for Win95 - even though the host is a Win8 64-bit system.

We are told that 16-bit and smaller code cannot run on a 64-bit system because of "processor limitations".  This is blatant falsehood, and the proof already exists. A Linux user can run 16-bit code in a 64-bit OS using the WINE project.

So it's highly unlikely that I will 'upgrade' to Windows X anytime soon.

    Update:

I installed Dosbox and got it all the way to where I run the exe file for the game setup, but when I did that it says "This game needs Microsoft Windows". So I guess it's not a DOS game but a Windows game, although an old one.

So, is there any other solution other than using Dosbox because that didn't work.

    Please help.

    Thanks,

    Geetu
