Win 8.1 64bit - Can't uninstall USB ports in system devices & other problems

My sisters Lenovo PC. Win8.1. 64bit. A few problems:

  1. She has 2 exclamation points in the device manager USB area. The USB ports seem to work sometimes. I just plugged my phone into one port to charge and it worked for about 5 minutes.

I clicked on uninstall and it opens up a window and asks if I want to uninstall and I click ok. It then just sits there uninstalling and never stops. I have to go to the task manager and stop the process. This happens on all of the USB things. She bought a Seagate 1TB external USB drive for a backup drive. It's unplugged.

  1. Using the find and fix problems it just scans for problems and never stops.
  2. Add a device - I click on this and nothing happens.

What's up??

    Hi,

If the port is 2.0 not 3.0 then that might be the reason of the issue.

If issue persists then the drivers for the device is either not installed or if installed then might be corrupted. So, you may try the steps provided to uninstall the USB from Device Manager, uninstall the device drivers from program listand then download the latest drivers from the manufacturer's website.

    Step 1:

Uninstall the Device from Device Manager

    • Open **Device Manager**
    • Expand the USB section.
    • Find the USB device.
    • Right click USB and select Uninstall.
    • Select the check box delete the driver software for this device.
    • Reboot the computer after uninstall process has finished.

    Step 2:

Uninstall the Device Drivers from Program List in Control Panel

    • Click on start, select Control Panel
    • Now click on Programs and select Programs and Features.
    • Find the USB.
    • Right click USB driver and select Uninstall.
    • Reboot the computer after the uninstall process has finished.

    Step 3:

Download and install the latest drivers for the USB from the manufacturer website

    Lenovo Drivers.

    Do keep us updated.

    Hello,

Thank you for providing us the opportunity to assist you congratulation for your new laptop.

I would appreciate if you can provide us the following information to help us understand the issue better.

    1. Are you getting error message/code while connecting USB Bluray/DVD? If yes, please provide me the exact error message/code?
    2. Do you have any security software installed?

If I understand you correctly USB device is not getting detected by your computer. The issue may arise if the currently loaded USB driver has become unstable or corrupt or if your PC requires an update for issues that may conflict with a USB device and Windows. This may also occur if your USB controllers may have become unstable or corrupt. So, I would suggest you to try the following steps and check if the issue persists.

    Method 1:

Please try the fixit(s) provided below which will help you resolve common issues related to USB ports and devices.

If Method 1 does not help, try method 2.

    Method 2:

Remove and reinstall all USB controllers.

    1. Open Device Manager by pressing Windows key + X and select device manager from the list. If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
    2. In the list of hardware categories, find and expand Universal Serial Bus controllers.
    3. Right-click every device under the Universal Serial Bus controllers node, and then click Uninstall to remove them one at a time.
    4. Restart the computer, and let the USB controllers get reinstalled.
    5. Plug in the removable USB device, and then test to make sure that the issue is resolved.

If the issue still exists, proceed to Method 3.

    Method 3:

Disable USB selective suspend setting. This method prevents your USB device from powering down.

    1. Press Windows key + Q, type power plan in the Search box, then click Choose a power plan.
    2. Next to your currently selected plan, click Change Plan Settings.
    3. Click Change advanced power settings.
    4. Click the box to expand USB Settings, then expand USB selective suspend settings.
    5. Click Plugged in, then click the drop down menu and select disabled.
    6. If you're using a laptop, click Battery, then click the drop down menu and select disabled.
    7. Click Apply, then click OK.

Hope this information is helpful. If the issue still persists, please post back for further assistance, we'll be glad to assist you.

    Regards,

You apparently did not read my post above before responding. USB ports will not uninstall.

I click on any USB uninstall and it opens up a window and asks if I want to uninstall and I click ok.

It then just sits there uninstallingand never stops. I let it run for 20min. Nothing. I have to go to the task manager and stop the process. I just found this happens on all of the Device manager items!!

A few quick notes. This is not a laptop. Lenovo PC - Win8.1 64bit. No error/codes given. Security software is McAffee.

She bought this Seagate 1TB as a external backup drive.

Method 1 - Find and fix does not solve the problem.

Method 2-  Device Manager - I clicked on any USB uninstall and it opens up a window and asks if I want to uninstall and I click ok. It then just sits there uninstalling and never stops. I let it run for 20min. Nothing. I have to go to the task manager and stop the process. I just found this happens on all of the Device manager items!!

Method 3 - Does not fix anything.

Note - All USB ports and hub on PC work. I've moved things around to verify this. Mouse, keyboard, camera etc. It recognizes all. Does it matter if my USB 4 port hub is a 2.0 not 3.0?

Seagate 1TB drive is listed in Portable storage Mass storage device but when I click on My computer to see drives it's not there.

Does Win8.1 allow you to backup to a external drive.
