If I uninstall Avast will Windows Defender start working and take over antivirus duties?

I've downloaded Windows 10 but already had Avastpro on my computer and didn't realize the windows defender came with it.  I'd like to change and use the windows defender.  It says right now that I'm not using defender.

If I delete the Avast pro will the defender then kick in and start working for me?  Is there something else needed to get it going?

When uninstalling Avast, please also use their specific removal tool to remove all possible leftovers, see: https://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility

After rebooting, Windows Defender should be automatically enabled.

    @KathKim -

    If you haven't already - can you try executing the following command (from an elevated command prompt) : "%programfiles%\windows defender\MpCmdRun.exe" -wdenable

    If this doesn't work - do let me know what 'Virus Protection' is displayed in the 'Security' section of Security Center.  Windows Defender will not launch if there is a 3rd party registered.

    You Must remove every single trace of Avast otherwise Windows defender will not turn on. When you delete Avast restart your PC. If Defender does not turn on that means there are still remnants of Avast somewhere on your computer like in the registry or a folder etc.  You will not have a Desktop icon for Windows Defender but it's easy enough to get one if you want after defender is activated.
