Samsung DVD/CD Super Writemaster SATA does not show in My Computer OR Device Manager - Can BIOS boot to it

Hello all,

My Samsung DVD/CD Super Writemaster SATA does not show in My Computer or Device Manager - Can BIOS boot to it.

The BIOS recognizes it. I can install Windows from it. I am on Windows 7 home premium.

I already:

  1. Scanned Windows 7 for errors
  2. Installed all Win7 Updates
  3. Scanned for Hardware Changes (no DVD/CD Rom show up in Device Manager)
  4. Checked Registry for Upper and Lower - They do not exist at all
  5. Ran Troubleshooter - Nothing
  6. Ran FixIt - Nothing
  7. Changed BIOS to boot to CD first just in case - Nothing
  8. Checked DVD Registry - Nothing listed
  9. Opened Desktop and removed and reinstalled Cables - Nothing
  10. Removed power cable and let bios clear - Rebooted Windows and nothing.

To be clear, the Drive is not being detected by Windows in any form. You cannot see DVD in Device Manager at all:

What other steps can I do to re-enable my DVD drive? It used to show maybe around 3 years ago. (I never use it, honestly who uses these things anymore?)

    Unfortunately,

This cannot be closed. Guess what? I purchased a BRAND NEW drive just like you said, and installed it today. The drive shows in BIOS and there is NO DVD/CDROM entry in the Device Manager.

I went through and deleted my ATA and AMD controllers under IDE like requested in another article, they reinstalled fine, but no DVD drive showing. This is a brand new drive and a brand new Windows 7 Professional.

Thanks for the advice. Yes as you can see per my initial post:

    1. Method 1: I already ran the Troubleshooter per step number 5. It did nothing and found nothing.
    2. Method 2: I will try these Regedit steps and get back with you.

edit: Step 1 of Method 2 is impossible. As you can see in my screenshot, DVD does not exist in Device manager per my initial post. Step 2 of Method 2 is also impossible. The driver package from Samsung requires that the drive be available in Device Manager.

Do you have any other suggestions?

    And canadian:

    1. Yes I have a desktop machine.
    2. I am a student, why would I buy a new drive just because Windows doesn't recognize it? Microsoft still supports Windows 7, therefore if there is an issue with the software communicating with the hardware and the BIOS recognizes the drive, they should resolve the bug.

    Thanks for the suggestion though.

I work on a lot of computers.  My experience is that the situation you describe is not UNcommon and that 9 times out of 10, it turns out to be failing drive.  Shop well, you can find these as an OEM device and sometimes under $20.

Another alternative you may want to consider is an external USB connected DVD drive.  Cost will be a bit higher.  However, they are totally portable, a bit slower.

I think you have a desktop???

Keep in mind that a replacement DVD drive for a desktop computer can be found for around $20.  Very easy install.
