Windows 10 compatibility with Dungeon Keeper 2

Hi I've just bought Windows 10 pre-installed on a new PC and tried to upload an old game called Dungeon Keeper. The game appears to install apart from publisher not being recognised but I cannot play the game. I have tried using the compatibility troubleshooter (I ran the game successfully in Windows Vista) and to change the games properties to a lower resolution but nothing works.  Does anyone know how to make my favourite game compatible with Windows 10?  Thanks,

    Just an update.

I have just uninstalled and reinstalled the game. It again downloaded all the system files and put a shortcut on the desktop but asked me to log in as administrator.

Once I had logged in as administrator it said there were compatibility issues with the game. I right clicked on the shortcut, selected properties and compatibility and changed it to Windows XP. I again tried to launched the game and it came with the same compatibility error and suggested I used the compatibility troubleshooter.

I tried changinge the compability to Windows Vista, clicked Apply and OK and again doubled clicked on the Dungeon keeper shortcut.

Again it didnt play and said there were compatibility issues.

Just wanted you to know specifically what I had tried.

    Thanks,

    Nigel

I've owned this game since its original release many moons back but have only just today tried playing it on Windows 10 to show a friend.

The game is trying to look for a now deprecated Directx component known as DirectPlay. It was replaced with Xinput from the XBox Consoles and not included in later versions of Windows from roughly 7 and up.

It is however still available to install as an additional feature in the "Windows Features" dialog.

You can access this by going to your control panel and then into "programs and features" and finally clicking "Turn Windows features on or off". You should then find it under "Legacy Components" just check the box and click on "OK" and it'll be installed.

Try running the game now and it should be good to go. (Note: you may still need to "run as administrator" on the first launch but it isn't necessary for subsequent launches.

    Hello,

My new PC uses WIndows 10 64-bit. I've just purchased Dungeon Keeper 2 and I had the same problem. I solved it by doing the following:

Firstly, make sure you have installed Patches 1.7 and Unofficial Patch 1.8

1 In your main Dungeon Keeper 2 directory, right mouse click on the DKII application icon. Select 'Compatibility' and choose 'Run This Program In Compatibility Mode for:

    Windows XP (Service Pack 2)'

2 Select 'Apply', followed by 'OK'

Now try to load the game and it should load and run fine now. It works for me.

    Hope this helps.

    Hi Nigel,

Thank you for posting in Community, we understand your concern and we will try our best to help you resolve the issue.

Before we proceed, I would like you to provide the information stated below:

    1. What is the game specification?
    2. Do you receive an error code/message while trying to launch the game?

I suspect that the issue may be due to compatibility. I would suggest that you try installing the game in Compatibility Mode and check if the issue arises.

    a) Right click the driver installation file and select Properties then tap or click the Compatibility tab.

    b) Place a check in the “Run this program in compatibility mode”.

    c) Tap or click the drop down box and select Windows OS that it worked in and then tap or click OK.

    d) Try installing the driver and check.

    Hope this information helps.

    Hi,

The game spec is: (recommended) Intel Pentium II 266 MHz, 64MB free system RAM, 16x CD-ROM drive, supported 4MB 3D Accelerator. It also requires DirectX 6.1 (supplied on CD).  Hope this is what you meant.

There is no error message while trying to launch the game just nothing.

I have tried already to use the Compatibility mode for Windows Vista (pack 1 and 2 and no pack) plus also other version of Windows!  and the running the game but nothing.

Not sure where to go next.  Hope someone can help.

    Thanks,

    Nigel
