Realtek PCIe FE Family Controller Ethernet Not Working On Windows 8.1

I see there seem to be a lot of people with the same problem as I have where I cannot get a wired Ethernet connection on my Windows 8.1 Dell laptop.  My WiFi connection is working fine but wanted to try my wired connection but kept getting Unidentified Network when trying to connect.  What are my options?  I have done all the checks that others have suggested online.  Is there something i can attach externally, like a USB/Ethernet port, and download new software to make this work or is there something I have to change in the laptop itself?  Please tell me there's an easy user friendly solution cos I am debating whether to upgrade to Windows 10 and cannot begin to do this if the problem follows me there!  Over to you experts! Many Thanks.

Thank you for posting your question on Microsoft community.

    a. Press Windows + W keys, type troubleshooting in the search box and press Enter.

    b. Click "View all" and then click "Network Adapter".

    c. Click "Next" and follow on-screen instructions.

If it does not help, then use method 2.

    Method 2:

Please use steps provided in this Microsoft help article and check the issue.

    Refer:

    Hello Danny,

    Thank you for the reply.

    I appreciate your concern.

This should not affect wireless connection. However, if issue still persists, you may reset TCP/IP and check the issue.

    Refer this article:

How to reset TCP/IP by using the NetShell utility

    Please keep us posted.

    Thank you

    Thanks.

I have a Dell Inspiron 17R running Windows 8.1. I have tried all the suggestions and still no luck.  I notice many others have the same problem so I'm guessing I might need an alternative way of connecting in a wired way, perhaps an alternative to this controller, if that is possible. As previously mentioned, my wireless connection is fine. My ISP, BT, have been no help so I'm getting desperate now.  Any ideas?
