LifeCam HD-5000 Driver and software installation fails on Windows 7 x64. Camera works using another driver, but very low quality

I have tried following the instructions included with the webcam, followed various instructions on various websites including suggested fixes on these forums, a 20 minute support call to microsoft (17 minutes on hold) where the 'expert' gave up within 3 minutes after he was unsure how to switch the shared screen from my secondary to primary monitor.

I seem to be periodically redirected to a non existing kb article on failed install which may or may not be on the topic - who knows?

Unplug > Uninstall > Reboot > Install > Plug in when instructed > Error

Software installed but camera not found (This has now been tried 7 or 8 times)

Uninstall > Plug in > Reboot > Could not find drivers on windows update

I have got the webcam working for Skype by using the drivers for another camera, but the quality is dreadful (may as well have not bothered with an hd webcam)

Has anyone got this working properly on Windows7 x64?

I have reinstalled the software/driver from Microsoft about ten times.  I have shut off my spyware and anti-virus.  I have reinstall Skype eight times.  Nothing.  Nada. I still just get a spinning wheel which I have left overnight on several occasions.  There must be some fix for this.  Or is this a sneaky way to get us all to buy a new webcam?

Tried that (disconnect > uninstall > reboot > install)  It says my system does not meet the minimum requirements.

AMD Phenom x64 9850 Quad Core

    8Gb RAM

    NVidia GeForce 8800 GTS

Device manager shows "Microsoft LifeCam HD-5000" under Imaging Devices and says the drivers are up to date.  It also shows "HD-5000 - Microsoft LifeCam" under Sound, video and game controllers with a yellow triangle with an ! in it.  When I choose to update it says the driver is up to date.

Installing from the driver cd that came with the camera says "Microsoft LifeCam HD-5000" installed successfully but "HD-5000 - Microsoft LifeCam" failed.

I also did the firmware update.

I cannot believe that the recommended minimum Intel would rule out using a 9850 Quad Core because it is AMD?

    Hi Paul,

You might try installing the cam with the anti-virus and firewall temporarily disabled.

You can also make sure you have the latest version of Windows Live! installed to see if that makes a difference.

Just had a windows update for the cam but still the same problem.

I tried an uninstall and reinstall but get an error saying to look at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/953691 which does not exist and points to a load of other people with the same problem saying about the same non-existant kb article.

Try downloading the installation software directly from the Microsoft hardware pages..

    http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/download/DownloadResult.aspx?category=ICE&type=LifeCam&name=7ND-00001&os=Win7_3264&lang=en

There is a firmware update there too..
