New cloned HDD still has 'bad sectors'.

Anonymous

I've recently had my HDD replaced by a brand new one, and all my data from the old one cloned, because the

Lenovo toolbox scan failed on the short smart selftest. The guys from the local computer store told me that

this would solve my problem. However, all scans that I run now still come up with the same results as before

the new disk was installed. Have they done something wrong, and does anyone know a way to correct this?

I've browsed the web, but haven't found a solution so far.

Fortunately it's only my old laptop, and I also have a fairly new pc without any S.M.A.R.T. problems, but still,

I'd like my laptop to be in good working order as well!

Thanks a lot in advance for any advice, Vince from Holland.

I've only done what the computer store guys suggested me to do, so they have replace the HDD

for me and cloned what was on the old one to the new one. They've told me that bad sectors, as they

cannot be read, couldn't possibly have been copied to the new HDD. However, my OS (Windows 7)

still has these bad sectors, or at least thinks it has.

I'm beginning to doubt their expertise now, and I will most certainly never let them do this again!

Next time I'll certainly start with a fresh install!

I've found a work around method, however. I've set my Lenovo Toolbox to ignore the two failed scans,

and I'm gonna keep an eye on the HDDScan results. As soon as new errors appear, I know it's time to

    change my HDD again.

I will still try what Sahil suggested, by the way.

Thanks for your reply, Canadian Tech, I appreciate it!

    Vince.

    Hi,

Thank you for the update on the issue. I would recommend running the chkdsk as mentioned in my previous post.

By doing so we can check the hard drive for errors. And the method I suggested is different from a regular chkdsk as it repairs the bad sectors and runs outside Windows, while you boot up your PC.

    Hi Sahil!

Thanks so much for responding. Before trying the chdsk/f/r option you suggested (is this any

different from the normal chdsk repair option?), I will give you some more information.

The Lenovo Toolbox scan automatically runs once every week or so. Down below you'll

find the screenshot. 'Opslag' means storage. This refers to the failed short smart selftest.

The hardware failure is a reading test. Both tests fail on exactly the same sector as before

my HDD was replaced. The HDDScan report is also exactly the same as before.

You've given me some hope that this issue can be solved! Thanks for that in the first place.

I've thought of re-installing Windows, but the guys from the computer store told me

not to bother, because of the errors showing up.

I sure hope you will beat them!

    Vince.

P.s.: I'll give you the HDDScan report in a new reply, because I've apparently exceeded the Mb's

    I can upload here.

    Hello Vince,

Welcome to Microsoft Community. I appreciate your efforts towards resolving the issue. I will certainly help you with the issue that you are facing.

The issue description seems a bit unclear and I would like to have a better understanding before we start working on it. I would appreciate if you could help me with more information.

    • What exactly is the issue that you are facing? Is there any error message?
    • Were you facing any hard drive or performance related issues for which you ran the Lenovo toolbox scan?

If you are facing hard drive related issues and you want to test your hard drive, you may run a chkdsk on the hard drive.

    Check a drive for errorshttp://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Check-a-drive-for-errors****

Note: While performing chkdsk on the hard drive if any bad sectors are found on the hard drive when chkdsk tries to repair that sector if any data available on that might be lost***.***

If the issue persists, follow the steps below:

    1. Press Windows + X while you are at the desktop screen.
    2. Click on command prompt (admin).
    3. Type the following command and hit enter.

    chkdsk /f /r

Note: If this asks you to run on restart, type y and hit enter and close the command prompt.

Restart the computer and check if it works.

    Hope the information helps.
