I just found a copy of the expansion pack today and decided to try and install it. I found the ONLY video I can find that actually has some sort of solution telling you to download a crack after installing it. While it works for him and apparently it does for other people commenting on the video it does NOT work for me in the slightest. It launches then minimizes and that's it. Getting really annoyed with this at the moment.
The Movies (Lionhead Studios) not running in Windows 10
Having recently installed Windows 10, I am mostly liking what it has to offer. Unfortunately, I am experiencing compatability issues with a piece of software that I use quite frequently. It is the 2005 PC game 'The Movies' (along with it's 'Stunts and Effects' expansion pack).
This game ran perfectly fine with Windows 8.1 and Windows 7, I managed to run the game on these platforms with no issues. With Win 10 however, it seems as though the game just won't launch. I try running as Administrator, I try using compatibility mode (which has NEVER ever worked for me) but the game just simply doesn't start up whatsoever. I've launched a few PC games that are even older with no problems.
The Movies still has a fairly active community in which I have a few movie projects I'm still working on with the software. If I can't get it to run on Win 10, I'll have to downgrade or just abandon work on the projects, both of which I don't want to do at this point. Hoping someone can help me out here, cheers.

2016-01-27T08:29:59+00:00 There are no compatibility issues with The Movies and Win10.
The Movies will run well on Win10 64bit, as it did on Win7. No Compatibility setting, tweaks or fixes necessary.
The issue with this game - if it is on disk - is entirely to do with Win10, and it's malware - DRM Blocking.
DRM Blocking only applies to disk based versions of the game, so a downloaded demo will not have the problem.
- The reason it only applies to the disk based version of the game is they have stripped the DRM from the
digital download versions of the games that use the secdrv.sys driver. I have more details in my rant --here--
- There is also a link to a noCD fix in my previous post on this thread.
- DRM issues, on 64bit Windows in particular, were already one of the main issues with games not running.
This and 16bit installers on old games are probably the most common issue with games not running, and being
mistakenly labeled as incompatible, from Win7 on.
Now MS wants to punish holders of collections of disk based games again.
- Regarding Media Player 9 . I did not install The Movies to Win10. It was installed when using Win7,
and I'm using VLC Media Player as default, so this may be why the games 'movies' will run, and there may be
a small potential that the game will not install due to newer versions of Windows Media Player being detected.
However, that the game required MP9 does not indicate the game will not run Win 10's MP 12 .
The game was released when Media Player 9 was the current, and minimum requirement version.
If anything, installing MP9 onto Win10 could cause issues.

2016-01-30T19:51:53+00:00 Thanks for that... but none of the advice here has worked...
So.. I figured I would try and partition my hd and install Win7... which should just be able to run The Movies...
I got the partition sorted quite easily and got myself a copy of Win7, but it will not install into partition...
Anyone else had that kind of problem?
Does anyone know if you can run Win98 in a partition under Win10?

2016-01-26T16:19:25+00:00 There is a whole issue with backwards compatibility.
Surely, a favorite game is no different to a favorite album... to effectively say with a tech update that, 'you just can't play that any more'... is just not good enough.
What if someone were to say you could not play your pre-2005 music cds or read books that they consider outdated?
What is it that allows Microsoft not to fix compatibility issues, but just to release a new media player?
In the meantime, if anyone finds a fix to get The Movies playing in Win 10, would they kindly let me know?
HJM
Try playing a phonograph record on your CD player, or a VHS tape on your DVD player. Both of those media will still play on the devices they were designed to play on. It's always the media providers who are responsible for ensuring compatibility with new OS versions, not Microsoft. Do you really think that it's reasonable to expect that new versions of Windows can be expected to maintain compatibility with all of the Windows software that's ever been sold?
