Error while sharing a printer "printer settings could not be saved share name is invalid". How to resolve?

Hi,

Please let me explain the scenario first.

I have two printers(Device and printers) and among those two printers one is shared and other is not.

Let us assume the printers as printer1 and printer2, where printer1 has a share name(printer1).

Now I deleted shared name of printer1 and unchecked the "Share this printer" check box in "Sharing" tab of printer1 properties and clicked ok button.

Now I tried assigning the removed share name of printer1(i.e. "printer1") to share name of "printer2" and click Apply button.

Then an error occured("Printer settings could not be saved. Share name is invalid").

If I want to assign in a way as I mentioned above do I need to remove any entry related to that share name(printer1) from registry?

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks in advance

    Hi,

Thank you for contacting Microsoft Community.

This error can also occur if the specific printer's share on the print server becomes corrupted.

You may try these steps and check the status.

Click Start, click Settings, and then click Printers.

Right-click the problem printer, and then click Sharing.

Write down the share name of the printer.

Stop sharing this printer by clicking the Not Shared radio button, and then close the printer folder.

Open Control Panel, double-click Services, select the Spooler Service, click Stop, and then click Start.

After the Spooler Service restarts, open the printer folder and re-create the printer share using the share name found in step 3. Do this by clicking Start, clicking Settings, and then clicking Printers. Right-click the problem printer, and then click Sharing.
