Automatic Reboot after power failure and automatically opening a program.

I'm attempting to monitor our home via the internet while traveling but our power routinely goes off at the house.

How do I get my computer to automatically reboot and then open a program after a power failure? Please be specific, as I'm not a programer:). Thanks.

This person asked a legitimate question. As you have no idea whatsoever, you should not mislead the person into believing that it can't be done.

How do you then explain how THOUSANDS of people do it? Without a generator? Using a UPS that gracefully cuts the PC over to battery when the power fails and after a period of time, GRACEFULLY shuts down the computer, and then when power is restored, automatically reboots the computer?

Before writing ****, you might search on things like ATX Power Supply, BIOS POWER BOOT - you know, things like that.

A UPS with APCUPSD software and setting an option in your BIOS will accomplish what you want, if you want your PC to be cleanly shutdown.

If you're ok with your PC crashing during a power failure, ALL YOU NEED TO DO IS SET THE OPTION IN YOUR BIOS (DUH POSTERS.............) TO REBOOT UPON POWER RESTORATION. The wording is BIOS dependent - see the Mainboard manual of your PC.

I had a  computer with XP on it that powered itself back on when the house power shut off. It was connected to a surge protector and I believe I set it up in BIOS to automatically reboot. When the power comes back on the surge protector, of course, comes back on and so did the computer. It worked well while I was traveling for two years. Then I bought a new computer with Vista.................................? Any more suggestions? Do I have to go back to using my OLD XP computer?

Use XP, and set your BIOS to autoboot. I have been running my geovision pci card running 6 cctv cameras for 4 years,, no problems except an new video card after 3 1/2 years of 24/7 .. FACT.... even with UPS back up it is'nt guaranteed... Bios... Autoboot :)

A power failure shuts down the machine hard (unless you have a UPS backup system attached and then it does so more gently after a few minites - depending on the battery you get - working while waiting for the power to come back on perhaps before the battery runs so low it must shut down the computer).  In either event, the computer is completely powered down.  The better battery you get, the longer you will be able to survive a temporary power failure and the computer will not shut down at all.

There is no way to get the computer to reboot when the power comes back online because that must be donemanually by pushing the button (remember it is off so no type of program will help).  The computer is off so no programs are working that can restart the system (or even detect that power has been restored).  There''s no attachment that can be added to the computer that will  do this that I'm aware of - again, the problem is that the power button needs to be pushed to reboot the system (and while the UPS system will detect restored power and begin recharding the battery, it cannot restart the computer).

Sorry, but the only solution I can think of is a generator tied into your electical system that activates when the power goes off and will last a whole lot longer than a UPS battery (especially if only the computer is connected to it and it is a large one with a large gas tank to last for hours at least - perhaps many hours).  It doesn't do what you want, but it may keep the computer running long enough to outlast the outage and avoid being shut down (at which point you're pretty much out of luck).

Sorry if that wasn't what you wanted to hear, but there just isn't any way to do waht you are requesting.

    I hope this helps.

    Good luck!
